Colonial Downs' Virginia Derby to Air Live on CBS Sports

Colonial Downs’ Virginia Derby to Air Live on CBS Sports in First Ever Network Television Broadcast of Race.

New Kent, VA -- The 10th Running of the Grade II, $1,000,000 Virginia Derby makes history with its first ever national network television broadcast to be aired on CBS Sports on Saturday July 21st at 5PM (Post Time 5:44PM), live from Colonial Downs in New Kent, Virginia according to Jeff Jacobs, Colonial Downs owner.

“We are bringing the wonderful summer experience of Virginia thoroughbred turf racing to the national audience for the first time,” said Jacobs. “The broadcast of the second leg of the Jacobs Investments Grand Slam of Grass will offer horse-racing fans everywhere a chance to experience the thrill of a top flight graded stakes event on the finest turf course in the country.”

Packaged by Leffler Sports, in association with Greg Lewis Communications, The Jacobs Investments Grand Slam of Grass broadcast will feature two live races on CBS Sports and portray the unique story of the Colonial Downs summer meet. The Grand Slam of Grass is a series of four turf races culminating on Breeders’ Cup day with a combined purse and bonus structure of $5,000,000. This makes it the richest Grand Slam in sports.

Hosting the CBS Sports broadcast will be Laffit Pincay III, a third generation racetrack veteran, and son of Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. Pincay III is trained and educated in sports reporting, serving as a sports anchor in New York and California before joining current employer HRTV. Co-hosting duties fall to another talented horse aficionado, Louisville Channel 3’s own Caton Bredar. Bredar’s family ties in racing run deep as well, being the daughter of trainer Ray Metzler and granddaughter of Hall of Fame jockey Ted Atkinson. Caton was most recently the lead anchor for four-and-a half years, for Television Games Network in California.

The 2007 Colonial Downs thoroughbred meet opens Friday June 15 and continues through August 7. Regular post time is 1:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday and 5:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. For more information call Darrell Wood at (804) 966-7223 or visit www.colonialdowns.com.
