Midwest: Kansas accentuates the negative for positive results

East | South | West

You're vulnerable, Kansas.

You're vulnerable because your coach knows you're vulnerable.

Kansas is playing great but there is something about the Jayhawks that screams Bucknell and Bradley. Over the weekend, coach Bill Self reminded his top-seeded Jayhawks of the embarrassing first-round losses to the Bison (2005) and Braves (2006).

"I still mention Bucknell and Bradley," Self said, twitching head as if the upsets have given him a nervous tic.

"I don't bring it up as a negative. I bring it up as, 'This is the type of game you gotta win in the tournament.'"

There seem to be too many quality teams here to assume that the Jayhawks are going to roll. Either UNLV or Kent State is capable in a second-round matchup. A potential regional semi against Clemson isn't going to be easy. Wisconsin or Georgetown could loom in the regional final.

Three storylines

1. Kansas State's Michael Beasley vs. USC's O.J. Mayo: Some folks' top two freshmen coming into the season meet in the first round in Omaha. Plus, K-State's Bill Walker is a former high school teammate of Mayo.

2. No pressure on Clemson: Oliver Purnell has resurrected this program. The Tigers were playing for their first ACC tournament title in 46 years on Sunday. How hard can the NCAA tournament be?

3. Remember us? Everybody's talking about Kansas, but Georgetown won the regular season in the ultra-tough Big East, has a big-time post player (Roy Hibbert) and has won seven of its last eight. Oh yeah, the Hoyas are coming off a Final Four appearance.

Midwest Region picks

Who will win: Kansas. The Jayhawks beat USC by just four points on Dec. 2. Watch for a possible rematch in the regional final.

Dark-horse pick: USC. Daniel Hackett is healthy. Mayo is Mayo. Taj Gibson is still brawny. The Trojans have won at Pauley. Tim Floyd might be the best coach in this region.

Most likely upset: No. 13 Siena over No. 4 Vanderbilt. The Saints have beaten Stanford and commit the sixth-fewest turnovers of any team in the tournament. Three players average at least 15 points.

Best mascot: Bucky Badger. Shiny coat, playful, good hygiene. Loves to eat mice, slugs, insects and worms. Makes a great pet.

He does not even mention Davidson but the wildcats are riding a 22 game win streak.  Look for them to knock out Georgetown in the second round and possibly get to the elite eight.  They are this years George Mason

This tournament is loaded, and it goes to show you how far this sport has come.  We have outgrown the 65 team format, and now we need to realign ourselves with the 21st century.  Bob Knight says that we need to make the field 128 teams, and I agree with him.  There are too many politics involved with the selection of the teams, and too many good teams for a field of 6 ...(more)

(POLL) As a Jayhawk, I really feel like this could be the season KU gets back to the Final 4. Personally, I think this region is tough, but beatable. My main suprise is having Kansas State going to the Sweet 16, and a possible Gonzaga upset over Georgetown. Anyways, who will win the Midwest, and why do you think they will win it?????

Kansas started the year 20-0, did not lose any in December. USC was close out there, Az took us to OT in Lawrence. Jayhawk's only losses were conference road games, Tx, K-St, OkSt. KSt is in MW region, meets USC 1st rd.

This is the same reason why a lot of the so-called "pundits" say KU and Memphis would be the first top-seeds to lose in the tournament. They are UN-informed.

Brain Dodd should check his facts before saying KU lost to USC. KU lost to Texas, K-State and Oklahoma State -- that's THREE losses -- not a hard fact to check.

Brain Dodd best be careful, he's nearing P ...(more)

Get your story straight Dodd---KU BEAT USC.  All their losses came in conference play.  How can we trust anything you say, if you can't get a simple fact like that right?

Best coach - Tim Floyd? Ha!  Best at backroom deals to get overhyped highschool players?  I'll agree to that.

How about the coach of the team that's a 3-seed yet doesn't have any players listed as your 'best' in bracket?

How about the coach of the only team in the bracket with zero losses to ranked teams? (that includes at the time o ...(more)
