Davidson will pay for students to attend Sweet 16

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- One of Davidson College's famous perks is the free laundry service for students. Now the school is adding another freebie: watching the Wildcats play in the NCAA tournament's round of 16.

The school's board of trustees set up a fund Wednesday to pay for any student wishing to travel to Detroit to see Davidson play Wisconsin in the Midwest Region semifinals. Students will get free bus transportation, two nights' lodging and a ticket to Friday's game.

Behind sophomore sensation Stephen Curry, Davidson upset Gonzaga and Georgetown last week for the school's first NCAA tournament wins in 39 years.

While the drop-off laundry service and trip to Detroit are free, annual tuition at the exclusive, liberal-arts school is just under $41,000 a year.

That sounds cool.  But if they really want to make sure they have lots of fans, maybe they should pay for more than just the students to go to the game.  I mean hey, what is their student body anyway?

My name is David and I have a son (2 actually) so if they'd bus me, lodge me and buy my ticket I'd go (and even take a son).   Oh wait, where are they playing?

Of Course the school does charge just under 41K for coming there so I guess this is what I would call sharing the love and saving good old Dad some extra expense for a week.

This really is a great gesture, and probably one fo the best a University has ever made, dollar for dollar, in advertising.  However, I cannot stand the fact that people are calling it free laundry or a free trip.  You can call it a bonus trip and say that laundry is included, but at over $38,000 a year in tuition, laundry is anything but free.  When I have kids, they can mail me th ...(more)

Hats off to Davidson in ensuring they get some support. Presumably, with the tuition prices many of the students could afford it, but this ensures that lots will go. My hats off!!!!
