Rock, choke vs. Jayhawks: Heels' Williams gags

« Back · 1 · 2

When the Jayhawks went inside offensively, Hansbrough was pliable and, at times, invisible.

Again, the Carolina loss is mostly the fault of Williams, who did finally get his Tar Heels motivated as they made the expected and hearty second-half comeback, but they shouldn't have been trailing by double digits to Kansas anyway.

This is not to take anything away from the Jayhawks. They handled themselves extremely well in this tournament, like grownups, refusing to spit in the face of the doubting media, who portrayed this game as a Carolina forgone conclusion. Schedule the parade, put the crown and cape on Hansbrough and call it a night.

So congratulations to the Jayhawks. You earned it.

But as my friend Stephen A. Smith would say ... howeeeeevvver.

In terms of pure talent, the Tar Heels have far more than Kansas. When they bleed, the blood type is All-American. They had the player many think is the best in the sport. This should have been an easy North Carolina win.

All of the awards and accolades got to North Carolina's heads. That can be the only explanation for the bizarre start to the game. The Jayhawks were hungry and North Carolina was arrogant.

So was Williams. In that crucial first half, as Kansas went supernova, Williams rarely dipped into his timeouts. It was as if he saying: We're North Carolina. We don't need no stinking timeouts.

So it's the unlikely Final Two: Kansas and Memphis.

Just what everyone predicted, right?

As a Maryland fan seeing bad things happen to North Carolina or Duke never brings me to tears. But that being said a couple of things: First of all Roy has a ring. Neither Self (who has always choked with all of his schools, and almost choked against Davidson), Nor Callipari (to date the biggest choker in NCAA since Guy Lewis of Houston) have a ring. So before we get too down on Williams and UN ...(more)

Here is what I wrote in another thread: UNC was routed because it was not tested during the early rounds of the tournament. It was given an unfair advantage by the NCAA, since it played four home games. UNC also faced inferior competition, save for Louisville, which would have defeated them if the game was played in a neutral court. I knew that UNC would be in trouble in a neutral court, ...(more)

Freeman had only one of the final four teams correct. And here's the kicker, he's got Georgetown beating UCLA in the finals with the combined score of 169.  The two slowest paced most defensive teams in the country score 169 combined.  What were you hoping for freeman, quadruple overtime? This just goes to show freeman knows nothing about college hoops.&nbs ...(more)

is not saying anything particularly racist!  A real improvement!  I don't know why freeman thought Carolina was so much better than kansas!   Carolina had 5 McDonalds All Americas and Kansas 4?  Freeman has no idea what he is talking about but at least he isn't making racist remarks ...(more)

This whole article, when he refers to "the media" saying the Jayhawks had no chance, even down to the Superman cape comment at the end, is just referring back to Freeman's article from yesterday, where HE said North Carolina was too tough, too talented for KU.

It would be too easy (but fun) to go through all the factual inaccuracies of this piece, but it's just so ...(more)

You're just trying to cover up your stupidity because you wrote an article about how Kansas had no chance. I picked Kansas to win! So don't tell me nobody saw it coming. You just didn't see it coming. It's bad enough to be wrong, but it's worse when you won't admit you messed up!

parts of this are pretty accurate but others are a far cry from the truth

1. i know several people who, coming into this weekend, said kansas's big rotation would overcome hansbrough, especially on kansas's offensive side seeing's how carolina's interior defense has been terrible all year. and it has been. hansbrough is a defensive liability especially when referees ...(more)

Your comment about Roy Williams and not using his timeouts...KU fans complained about Roy doing that back when he was at KU, so it must not be just a UNC thing...regardless, I think Roy doesn't call timeouts b/c he actually is trying to...gasp...build character in his players.  By not calling timeouts, Roy showed faith in all the hard work and time these players put practicing for situati ...(more)

I dont think i quite understand your logic Mr. Freeman.  All 4 teams were number one seeds so to say that it should have been an easy win for UNC is crazy. Kansas is good. If you were to right an article about how it should have been an easy win for KU if they lost i would still call you crazy. There are no easy wins anymore in college basketball. If you dont bring your a game you could lose. ...(more)

The unlikely final two??? Why??? Cause the media is in love with Tyler and Love??? They have been all over those two this entire year cause they can finally cling to some time bit of hope that the white man can play ball. Tyler isnt the best player in the country, its Beasley. I had KU meeting up with Memphis in my bracket. After the loss to Tennessee everyone ignored Memphis. All they wanted ...(more)

This story is about how Mr. Freeman didn't do his homework before this game, so since he messed up, he has to call it a choke job by Roy.  To say that and also to say that Bill Self and John Calipari are choke artist themselves because they haven't won a national championship.  NEWS FLASH:  winning a national championship isn't that easy FREEMAN!  I hate to ...(more)

Mike, I thought you had turned a corner with your great women's basketball story, which made Gregg Doyel look like a first-class idiot. But then you return to this, suggesting KU didn't belong on the same court as Carolina. As a Missouri fan, I have no problem admitting that KU is a quality team, they've been great all year and they deserve the spot they're in. As for tonight, I will not claim I h ...(more)
