Livengood's good life marred by Arizona-Olson morass

Jim Livengood was on his way to a fundraiser when his cell phone rang.

And then it rang again. And again. And ...

"I can't even tell you how many phone calls I get about those types of things," the Arizona athletic director said. "When I checked my messages I had a message that said 'Hey, Coach is on the radio explaining a number of things.'"

The coach is Lute Olson.

Perhaps you have heard him.

Without warning, he called into a local radio station two Fridays ago to talk about his divorce proceedings. Minutes later, his estranged wife, Christine Olson, rang the same show, and it's a shame Howard Stern didn't get a piece of these interviews. Or Jerry Springer even. Because I tell you, this is perfect material for those guys -- an ongoing and ever-changing reality series playing out in a very public way, kinda like a senior citizen's version of The Hills.

(Are you Team Lute or Team Christine?)

It's a circus by any standard.

Which makes Livengood the ringmaster.

So I called to get the ringmaster's reaction.

"My reaction is there's a part of me that understands what Lute is all about, trying to explain things because the rumor mill is running rampant," Livengood said by phone. "But my reaction also is, 'Guys, is there any way we can get this on a little bit more low-key?'"

Good luck with that.

It really is difficult not to feel badly for Livengood. He has been the AD at Arizona since 1994 and no extended period has been tougher than the one he is currently enduring. His marquee sport -- Wildcats basketball -- is going through turbulent times that kinda started when Arizona blew that 15-point lead to Illinois in the Elite Eight of the 2005 NCAA tournament but really picked up when Olson took a leave of absence in November 2007.

Mike Stoops. The guy has done nothing as a football coach, but they gave him an extension. As a Devil fan it could not make me happier, but now they can not even afford to hire a new football coach will all the money they would owe Stoopid. Wow, what a great time to be a wildcat????
They did win the swimming championships so i guess they have that going for them.

Lute Olson does have a lot of work ahead of him, but anyone who has been around the program during his tenure should know that he has already been through much worse and still put elite basketball teams on the floor. When Bobbi Olson was fighting cancer, Lute was there for her and his team. Many of the players from those years said it brought them closer as a group and Olson said his players li ...(more)

You didn't hit Arizona's battleship.

I love how you provide two views that can be seen as reasonable from Arizona fans; Olson can't coach anymore and should step down, or Olson can't coach anymore but should be allowed to coach because of what he's done in previous years. Anyone of the opinion that Olson can still coach (hasn't missed a tournament since the

For a few years now, sports columnists have been writing what a great head coach Pastner would  someday become. And they lauded the recruiting job he has done at Arizona. With the talent John Calipari has already been reeling in at Memphis, it is scary to think Memphis may recruit even better with the addition of Pastner. Until last year, I always assumed Arizona and Lute were grooming Pas ...(more)

Ive been saying for a few years now that Lute is done. Keep him in the program as a personnel guy with some b.s. title and let him pass on his recruiting skills to someone who can coach,

Lutes a legend.. but its time to move on
