--Alabama State G Andrew Hayles became the first player to be named SWAC Player of the Year since Steve Rogers won the award in 1990-1991 and 1991-1992. Earlier this season, Hayles became the 25th player in ASU history to eclipse the 1,000 career points mark. He scored a season-high 28 points against Grambling State last week.

--Of the 17 players on ASU's roster, only five were on the team last season.

COACH
Lewis Jackson, third year at school, first year in NCAA Tournament.

LAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE
Michigan State 69, Alabama State 35, first round, 2001 NCAA Tournament.

THEY'LL ADVANCE IF: The Hornets need Andrew Hayles to score at least 20 points and Chief Kickingstallionsims to be a force inside.

Arizona State is disappointed not to be in the Big Dance, so the Hornets need to take advantage of any early letdown the Devils may have before getting into the flow of the game.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"The NIT bid is a great opportunity. Every year, there are some very good teams in the NIT, and it's a chance for us to continue to build our program, get more experience for our young players and reward our guys for a tremendous season. I am very proud of how hard they have worked." -- Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson.
