Falcons report: Getting inside
This was scheduled to be a rebuilding season for the Falcons. First-year coach Louis Orr put his stamp on the program, raising the bar by getting the Falcons to play at a higher level this year. When Ryne Hamblet was declared academically ineligible early in the season, the Falcons were left without a senior on the roster. The lack of senior leadership showed in BGSU's road record. The Falcons finished with an 8-5 home record but owned a 4-10 mark on the road, suffering a 46-point loss at Buffalo late in the season. Still, Bowling Green thrived at times during an up-and-down season. The Falcons built the foundation for a solid 2008-09 season. Several players stepped up and produced before the Falcons faltered in the final month. The Falcons, 13-17 and 7-9, more than doubled last year's 3-13 conference record. Early in the season, Nate Miller and Chris Knight formed a solid inside duo, accounting for the bulk of BGSU's scoring and rebounding. After Hamblet was ineligible, Joe Jakubowski and Brian Moten helped fill the void and became an integral part of the team. Jakubowski, a freshman point guard, averaged 7.8 points and 3.1 assists while making 33 3-pointers. Jakubowski's improvement was evident in conference play. He averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 assists in MAC games to be named to the MAC All-Freshman team. Moten, a junior guard, was named MAC Sixth Man of the Year. Moten started just two games, but scored in double digits in 14 of his last 18 regular season games. Like Jakubowski, Moten lifted his level of play late in the season, ranking second on the Falcons in scoring in conference games. He led the Falcons in 3-point shooting, making 32 threes in conference play. Miller and Knight remained consistent throughout the season. Miller averaged a team-leading 13.2 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. The junior had a solid all-around season, compiling 81 assists, 44 steals, 12 blocks and making 23 3-pointers. Knight had a stellar freshman year, leading the Falcons in rebounding and finishing second in scoring. Knight averaged 10.7 points and 7.3 rebounds in his first year. The sophomore center tandem of Marc Larson and Otis Polk was another positive for the Falcons. Larson started all 30 games for the Falcons, while Polk came off the bench. The two-headed center duo combined to average 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds and blocked 87 shots. The Falcons won just four games on the road. They faded late in the season after a promising start led to speculation Orr would win the MAC Coach of the Year. The Falcons lost their last three games, and eight of their last 11.
