Gentlemen report: Getting inside
After showing marked improvement from two seasons ago, Centenary found itself stuck in neutral for much of the 2007-08 season. The Gents finished with a 10-21 record, going quietly out of the Summit League tournament, losing to top-seeded Oral Roberts by 28 points. That overall mark was a mirror image of the 2006-07 record, as Centenary and coach Rob Flaska will be pressured to put the team back in drive next year. The Gents were full of youth and inexperience this season, with only one senior on the roster amidst 10 combined freshmen and sophomores. It didn't seem like the team ever found a rhythm, despite an early season nonconference victory over Texas Tech and then-coach Bob Knight on Dec. 1. Centenary would go on to win only five games after that, which included separate losing streaks of six and 10 games. Fatigue was likely a major factor down the stretch with the heavy number of underclassmen. The Gents played teams close on a number of occasions, but didn't seem to have that extra gear to push them over the edge. Centenary lost five games by fewer than four points and had zero wins in overtime against three losses. Another troublesome area for the Gents resided on the boards. Centenary finished last in the league in rebounds and had no player averaged more than five per game. The Gents also had the Summit's worse defense, allowing 77.0 points per game. Centenary did have flashes of solid offense, however. The team's 70.3 points a game ranked fourth in the league, helped by guards Tyrone Hamilton and Nick Stallings, who combined to average almost 32 points per game. And then there was the emergence of forward Lance Hill, who averaged double digits in his first season as a starter. Flaska is only 24-65 during his short career at Centenary. That could be cause for concern during this offseason, though he didn't have a whole lot to work with this past year. But even if Flaska gets a vote of confidence for next season, he'll likely need to show a significant increase in the Gents' play. With almost the entire team back, there will be no more room for excuses. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
