Late in the year things seemed to be going so well for Cincinnati that coach Mick Cronin was actually campaigning to get an NCAA Tournament bid.

Instead, what he got was the shaft.

His words were followed by a seven-game losing streak to end the season, leaving them feeling fortunate to land a spot in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational. Still, the resume showed six more Big East victories this year than last, including wins over Louisville, Syracuse, Villanova, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

The No. 1 chore for next season is to find someone to join All-Big East guard Deonta Vaughn in putting the ball in the basket.

"I'm excited about the talent level we have coming in," Cronin said. "Our experience won't be quite as good, but our talent will be better. We'll be able to score the ball more, but we'll have a lot of new guys, so it's important we get our schedule as good as we can get it next year."

Cronin will be blending in a group of at least five newcomers, including two transfers, with what is an extremely young team. How quickly they take to each other will determine just how far forward this team moves next year.

Perhaps I'm jumping the gun, but I'm already looking towards the 2009 recruiting class. As it stands, Cincy has a verbal from Danny McElroy, who averaged 17 points per game at LaSalle this past season, if I'm not mistaken. From what I've read, he's not terribly impressive, but is a four-year player, a characteristic that Cronin looks for in recruits - it allows them to develop slowly. With the ...(more)

well its mick 3rd year this year and it will be the first with all the players he has brought in. i dont count the first 2, because his first year he put a team together in like a month, and then last year none of his recruits got to much playin time, besides alvin.

so i thought it might be fun to try and predict 5 things for the upcoming year. plz leave your 5 and when the year is over ...(more)

I've been hearing TONS about Nick Aldridge lately, that he's tough, hard-working, good height, quick under the basket, and he was recruited by Huggins, so he MUST be good. But just to look at the other side here...I know Huggins recruited him, but if he was so good, why did he end up at Western Carolina? Were any other big-time schools recruiting him, or was UC just going to take a chance? Will he ...(more)

I just looked at ESPNs College Basketball Recruiting rankings and Yancy Gates and Cashmere Wright are both rated near the top ten for their position. They are 4 star recruits, described as having All-America potential. Being from Cincinnati, I know Gates was good, but, I have to admit, I was a little skeptical about Wright, because of the small school he plays for. But sites like ESPN have access ...(more)

Looks like Mick has landed his first 5-star recruit at UC. Yancy Gates moved up in the latest Rivals rankings from 81 to 22, and from a 4-star to a 5-star.

Great to see Yancy getting the respect he deserves. He recently played in the Derby City Classic All-Star game at Freedom Hall in Louisville. He scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds and won MVP for his team. He and Ray Shipman also ...(more)
