Had it meant something a little more, Manny Ubilla's spectacular game-winning overtime 3-pointer that beat Saint Francis (Pa.) on March 1 would have been truly special.

Special shot. Final home game. Senior Night. Tom Green's 400th win. All good stuff. The problem was it didn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

The Knights, who suffered through a painful season, had been eliminated from postseason possibility a few nights earlier with a loss at Wagner. So, all the Ubilla hero shot did was knock Saint Francis out, and perhaps put the final nail in the Bobby Jones coaching tenure at the school.

Fairleigh Dickinson finished with an 8-20 record, losers of nine of its last 11. The Knights were 4-14 in the NEC and finished in a four-way tie for the fourth and final tournament spot with a 4-14 league record.

There was really nothing about this season that went very well, starting with point guard Cameron Tyler beginning the campaign under academic suspension and never coming back. There were injuries that depleted the roster and, when it came down to it, just not enough to get the job done.

That's what made Ubilla's final college shot so unimportant. Other than to give Green that 400th win and send the seniors out on a high note at the end of a low year, it just didn't matter.

I just set up a new college baseball forum a couple of days ago and I'm trying to get the word spread out. Should be fun once the season gets going.
