Coach Tim Jankovich juiced up the Missouri Valley Conference's biggest underachiever in recent seasons. Illinois State has the facilities, tradition, location and support to be one of MVC's better programs.

Jankovich took inherited talent and gave it direction and purpose. The Redbirds finished second in the MVC and won a game in the NIT. It was the program's first postseason appearance since 2001. The Redbirds were a good NCAA at-large candidate before upsets squeezed them out.

Jankovich turned the Redbirds from an athletic and inconsistent team into a defensive force. They held opponents to fewer than 60 points in their final eight victories. Four of those opponents didn't reach 50. The Redbirds were at their best when they used their depth and quickness to shut down the opposition.

Point guard Boo Richardson went from turnover prone to steady leader. Sophomore Osiris Eldridge continued his development into a Valley star. Forward Anthony Slack became one of the Valley's best big men.

Jankovich's first season did leave some work to be done. The Redbirds lost three games to MVC champion Drake, including a 79-49 loss in the tournament title game. Illinois State's offense became a critical problem in a second-round NIT loss to Dayton, 55-48 at home.

The Redbirds lose five seniors, including Richardson, Slack, Dom Johnson and Levi Dyer. All played big roles in this season.

Hey guys, I'm trying to set up a sim league starting next season, where a simulator plays out the game and gives you realistic scores and stuff, and your Redbirds are still available! If you are interested or have any questions feel free to e-mail me at dosegorillaz@aim.com.

I think you guys are solidly in considering Syracuse, Baylor, and Arizona State all lost and they were all on the bubble. Also, UAB and Houston lost today.

I never rooted for Ill. State before but gotta stick with the Illinois teams. But I like how you guys play, I think you guys could pull a 1st round upset given the right draw.

That was about the worst possible thing that could have happened today. I never even considered a blowout after ISU played Drake tough twice this year already. I don't think ISU got blown out all year did they??? Anyway, I still think they deserve an at large bid considering it was Drake that won the MVC tourney - 2 bids from the MVC is warranted.

But hey, that's just my op ...(more)

Does anybody know if Fox Sports Midwest (which will carry the Illinois State game Friday night) is part of the Insight cable package in Bloomington?

I don't own Insight, so I was wondering if any of the bars will carry it.

At least for those in the chicagoland area the game will be carried on Comcast SportsNet(CSN).  I finally recovered from the loss to Indiana St!!  That one was rough but they are finishing strong now.  They seem to be on a roll while having to rely on more from the bench and are playing defense like they did earlier in the season. What a game to finish the regular season o ...(more)

I have a feeling the tourney is going to be a battle. I don't care what anyone says, I think the Valley is a legit conference and deserves 2 or 3 bids depending on who wins the tourney. Furthermore, I just don't see how ISU can't be on the list unless they completely lay an egg against a low seed in the first game. If they win a game or 2 - and this is just my opinion - they should be a ...(more)
