FINAL RECORD 26-7 overall, 15-3 in the Summit League, second place.
WHAT WENT RIGHT This was a team that meshed well immediately. While G George Hill got a lot of the publicity because of his solid all-around work, the Jaguars had other key components in Gs Gary Patterson and Austin Montgomery and F Jon Avery, all of whom were double-digit scorers. The Jaguars were tops in the Summit League in several categories, including field-goal and free-throw percentage, 3-pointers, steals and turnover margin. They also finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record at home. With all that said, it's definitely hard to figure out how this team was left out of one of the postseason tournaments.
WHAT WENT WRONG Not a whole lot. This is a team that gave the league champion, Oral Roberts, one of its only two losses in the conference and featured the Summit's Player of the Year in George Hill. Basically, this team just lost at the worst possible time -- in the conference tournament championship game, which left IUPUI as one of the better teams to not continue playing. As far as on the court, the Jaguars struggled all season on the boards, finishing eighth out of 10 teams in the Summit League for rebounding at just 21.1 a contest.
QUOTE TO NOTE "A lot of it has to do with what's written on our chests. It wasn't about the body of our work." -- IUPUI coach Ron Hunter, to the Indianapolis Star about getting left out of the NIT and CBI despite having a 26-7 overall record.
