FINAL RECORD 17-14 overall, 11-7 in the Summit League, third place.
WHAT WENT RIGHT Oakland made headlines in December with its win over Oregon, which at the time was ranked 23rd in the nation. Coach Greg Kampe made a decision to use a different tempo approach in that game, something that carried over to the rest of the year. The Golden Grizzlies finished second in the Summit League in scoring at 76.7 points per game, helped out by F Derick Nelson and G Johnathon Jones, both of whom ranked in the Summit's top 10 individual scorers.
WHAT WENT WRONG While win over the Ducks was huge, the Golden Grizzlies may have peaked too early in the year. Oakland seemed to tire at the end of the season, dropping seven of its final 15 games. The team was also hurt by an early-season injury to Erik Kangas, who broke his collarbone and had to miss five contests. Oakland's lack of size was glaring as well, as the team finished second to last in the Summit League for rebounding, averaging just 20.9 boards a contest.
QUOTE TO NOTE "This class has three players that have a chance to have their names etched in the OU record book when their careers are all said and done. They all have tremendous athleticism and all three have a great shooting touch." -- Coach Greg Kampe, to the Oakland Press on the Golden Grizzlies' incoming freshman class for next season, which some are calling one of the best in school history.
