South Dakota State ended its Division I reclassification process the way it started -- with defeats. The Jackrabbits finished their first year in the Summit League with a 69-64 home loss to fellow bottom-feeder Centenary on March 1. SDSU ended the season 3-15 in the conference, 8-21 overall.

But those aren't the numbers that sting the most, necessarily. A program that recorded five straight 20-win seasons in its last years in Division II finished its four-year transition with a 33-84 mark. Included are three straight seasons of 20 losses or more.

"The one thing that has to change is the belief late in games that you can win them," Jackrabbits coach Scott Nagy said. "We have no players now -- Ben (Beran) was the only one -- that have played on a winning team, so the only way we're going to be able to change it is through hard work."

It will be a battle for SDSU to rebound. Nagy spoke often this season about his young players getting mentally beat down by all the losing.

"All of the losses are starting to pile up on some of these kids and they are going to need some time away from it," Nagy said.
