Stephen F. Austin almost grabbed its first NCAA appearance in school history, but the Lumberjacks lasted just one night in the NIT.

Having fallen short of the NCAA automatic bid, the Lumberjacks drew a strong Atlantic 10 rep, Massachusetts, a team that shaped up as a tough draw considering their fast-paced style.

But SFA stopped the 3-point barrage it anticipated -- UMass shot less than 30 percent from the 3-point line. What it didn't do was stop Dante Milligan. A role player most of the season, Milligan scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Minutemen.

The Lumberjacks wrapped up a spot in the NIT with a regular-season Southland Conference title. But, SFA was a semifinal victim during a conference tournament in which none of the top four seeds made the final. The Lumberjacks make their first postseason appearance since 1987, their first season in Division I.

Southland Player of the Year Josh Alexander, healthy after being hobbled by a hip injury, scored 21 points and grabbed seven boards against UMass.
