Red Flash report: Getting inside
Another disappointing season ended in a most-painful way, and there seemed to be all kinds of doubt concerning the future of Saint Francis basketball. Two days after his own team had already been eliminated, Fairleigh Dickinson's Manny Ubilla hit a 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer to win the game and end the Red Flash's season. Did it end Bobby Jones' coaching tenure at the school? After all, Saint Francis has missed the NEC tournament three straight years and is 18-68 over those seasons (14-44 the last two), dropping Jones' coaching record at the school to 85-167 and making you wonder. Classy guy. Nice guy. But doesn't a coach have to win? This year's team, which appeared to have talent and in fact beat rival and eventual league regular-season champion Robert Morris back in December, closed with five straight losses (two of them in overtime) and dropped eight of its last nine. It went on the road for the last two games of the season and lost to two teams right there at the bottom of the standings with the Flash. The final record was 6-23, 4-14, leaving the Flash in a four-way tie for the final playoff spot, a spot that would have belonged to Saint Francis if that Ubilla shot failed. That's the way things have gone for Jones and his team in recent years, though. You wonder if he'll have another shot. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
