Skyhawks report: Getting inside
The Skyhawks (17-16, 11-9) made one of the most dramatic turnarounds in OVC history in 2007-08. After winning just five conference games last season, UTM made it all the way to the OVC Tournament semifinals for the first time in school history. Despite losing 78-77 in a heartbreaker to the eventual champion Austin Peay in the semifinals, UTM's impressive late-season run will be plenty to build on in the offseason. The key to the team's success was the recruiting of coach Bret Campbell, who brought in junior college transfer guard Lester Hudson and freshman guard Marquis Weddle. Hudson set numerous OVC records, averaged more than 25 points and was named the league's player of the year. Weddle averaged 17 points a game and was named the freshman of the year. Needless to say, the immediate future looks bright the Skyhawks, who in one season, went from a doormat to a major contender in the OVC. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange.
