Islanders report: Getting inside
One season after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was finding plenty of new experiences. A new coaching staff, loads of new players, a first with a 20-loss season and -- wow -- a mention in the NCAA notice of allegations for some recruiting improprieties by the new staff, which was another first. The NCAA business is not likely to be settled in some form until February or March when the governing body is expected to rule on the school's answer to allegations. The on-the-court business likely will be settled around the same time. There were problems. Center Chris Daniels, one of the few holdovers from the NCAA team, didn't get the ball inside. There was plenty of blame to shift -- Daniels for not getting open, the staff for not designing plays for him and the point guards for not pushing the ball inside. Combo guard Kevin Perkins eventually was moved to the point, but freshman Terrance Jones could be the answer this season. Forward Justin Reynolds displayed some strong ability at power forward and was one of the few bright spots last season. Forward Demond Watt plays the same position, but also stood out as a strong rebounder. Forward Horace Bond was a find as a defensive gem. Finding a replacement for Daniels, finding anybody inside, will be a major issue. Freshman center Jawan Nelson showed up definitely not in game shape. Center Filip Toncinic, a 7-footer, had a few solid moments, but was a non-factor for much of the season. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
