THE GOOD NEWS
Coach Ben Howland has the UCLA machine rolling again. Players will come and go, but the Bruins seem here to stay, at least for the forseeable future. Defense and toughness have become staples again at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA recruited well, with four top prospects already signed. Leading the way is All-America guard Jrue Holiday of nearby North Hollywood.

THE BAD NEWS
Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook decided to enter the NBA draft. Junior Luc Richard Mbah a Moute chose to try the NBA, too. Darren Collison stayed, but Chace Stanback didn't -- he decided to transfer.

KEY RETURNEES
The losses can't be glossed over, but Collison and Josh Shipp are still around to give the Bruins a starting point and experienced guards. The other stars of the Bruins' show next season could well be freshmen.

ROSTER REPORT

--Freshman center Kevin Love was held to 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting by Memphis senior Joey Dorsey and the Tigers' constant double-teams. Love had nine rebounds, but even lost that battle, as Dorsey pulled in 15.

--Junior wing Josh Shipp had nine points against Memphis, but averaged just 6.8 in five NCAA tournament games, shooting 4-for-19 from 3-point range.

--Point guard Darren Collison shot just 1-for-9 and scored a season-low two points against Memphis before fouling out. Collison had three games of five points or fewer among UCLA's five NCAA outings.

--For the first time in his UCLA career, the family of junior forward and Cameroon native Luc Richard Mbah a Moute watched him play in person. Father Camille Moute a Bidias, dressed in a leopard-skin waist wrap and a tan, floppy hat, and mom Agnes Goufane Ziem, sporting a Final Four baseball cap and a No. 23 UCLA jersey, made the 18-hour flight to see their son. Also on hand was his aunt, Danielle.
