Bearcats report: Inside slant
There will be no competition this week at quarterback. Redshirt freshman Chazz Anderson will make his second career start for the Bearcats in the Big East Conference home opener Saturday against Rutgers. "He outperformed Zach (Collaros) in terms of the reps that he got," said head coach Brian Kelly. "He was more efficient in running our offense." Collaros, also a redshirt freshman, competed with Anderson for the start in Friday's game at Marshall, with both junior Tony Pike and senior Dustin Grutza out with injuries. Anderson threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score in a 33-10 victory over the Thundering Herd. "Zach is a very good quarterback and can start for us as well," said Kelly. "But he freelances a little bit. I needed somebody that was going to stick with the game plan. I don't want to paint the picture that Zach is off the reservation. That's not the case." Pike, who broke his left forearm in a win at Akron, is expected to begin practicing this week and could return by the Oct. 25 game at Connecticut, which follows a bye week. He will not be available to play against Rutgers. "He's not going to dress for that game," said Kelly. "He'll get some practice work this week in a non-contact format." Grutza's injury was more serious. He broke his right fibula and had a residual high-ankle sprain Sept. 6 at Oklahoma and will return no sooner than Oct. 30 against South Florida.
