Seminoles report: Notes, quotes
--The Seminoles had a quiet weekend watching the NFL draft in late April. For the first time since 1987, no Seminoles player was chosen during the first day of the draft. DT Andre Fluellen went in the third round on the second day. DT Letroy Guion and linebacker Geno Hayes were fifth- and sixth-round selections, respectively. The team's three-member draft class is the program's second-smallest since 1987. Javon Walker and Chris Hope were the only Seminoles drafted in 2002. --QB Christian Ponder, who played extensively in one game last season and got rave reviews, took advantage of the Drew Weatherford's absence due to injury to perform well in scrimmages. In the spring game, he was 12 of 19 for 140 yards, one touchdown (in red zone) and one interception. --LB Nigel Bradham, a prep All-American from nearby Wakulla, less than 30 miles from Tallahassee, enrolled early and went through spring drills. He found the difference in the levels to be a lot greater than he thought. But he was glad for the experience and got the opportunity to play on the second team. SPRING MOVERS OG Rodney Hudson -- Won the team's "Hinesman Award" as the most dominating player in FSU's spring practice. Hudson is part of the new group of linemen that FSU hopes to build its future around. LB Dekoda Watson -- Named the defensive MVP of spring after playing well in scrimmages and the spring game. Watson's biggest impact so far has been on special teams, but is ready to step into a starting role. WR Bert Reed -- Signed in 2007 as one of the Seminoles' fastest players, he struggled last year with family issues and adjusting. Reed has since turned heads with solid performances in the classroom and on the field. OT Antwane Greenlee -- Sustained a serious injury in practice before the Alabama game last September and didn't play again. Now, Greenlee has emerged as a starter at outside tackle. He returned to the player everyone expected when he was signed in 2007. CB Dionte Allen -- Redshirted last year, Allen has impressed with speed and cover skills during spring. With Jamie Robinson moved to safety, the Seminoles need immediate backup help. Allen may be ready. QUOTE TO NOTE Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
