--Greg Mathews' 39 catches last year (three touchdowns) immediately make him the leader of the receivers. Mathews proved to be a reliable No. 3 receiver last year, but now has to vault all the way up to No. 1. He already hooked up with new QB Steven Threet for a long completion in the spring game. The Wolverines will need a lot more of that to be competitive in the Big Ten.

--Potential has never been a problem for Tim Jamison. Staying healthy has. Now more than ever, Michigan needs Jamison to put it all together for a big senior season at defensive end. If there is depth anywhere, it's on the defensive line. That should help take some pressure off the back seven, provided Jamison brings the pressure from the front line.

SPRING MOVERS

QB Steven Threet -- He's had four offensive coordinators in just over a year, so it's a good thing Threet was valedictorian of his high school class. He seemed to take hold of the starting job in the spring. He's not as mobile as sophomore Nick Sheridan, but Threet has the stronger arm. Sheridan threw three interceptions in the spring game, while Threet threw just one.

LB Jonas Mouton -- An ankle injury likely kept Mouton from starting last season. Now healthy, he'll likely be the starter at weak side linebacker. Because of the high ankle sprain, Mouton didn't appear last season until the sixth game and finished with just five tackles. He parlayed a good spring into what should be a full-time job.

RB Brandon Minor -- Asserted himself as a viable option in the running game with two touchdowns during the spring game. Rich Rodriguez tinkered with Minor and Kevin Grady lined up in the backfield at the same time, although Minor might even take some snaps at quarterback.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I don't think coaches are ever happy. We wish we were more polished, I know I do. But that's part of the progress, that's part of the new offense, new system running new stuff every day. We threw a lot at them this spring." -- offensive coordinator Calvin Magee
