Scarlet Knights report: Inside slant
Six games into the season, on the road in the Big East, this is a line-in-the-sand game for the Scarlet Knights. It's tough when that can be said about a 1-4 team going on the road to face a 4-1 squad that's only loss is to the No. 1 team in the country and that has won the past two games between the two schools. But that's where Rutgers is right now. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a tough loss in Morgantown, where the team misfired on a last-minute drive late in the game when a touchdown would have tied it. It's the second time in three weeks the offense has fallen short in the clutch. That's increased the heat on Mike Teel, but he's not alone in the offensive crosshairs. The running game hasn't done much to speak of, and apart from Kenny Britt the receivers have been ordinary or worse. Tiquan Underwood in particular isn't seeing the ball much and isn't catching it when it comes his way. Because he's the quarterback, and a senior, Teel gets the blame. But he can also look to his defense and ask if they could give him a short field to work with a little more often as well. Rutgers has an experienced defense that was expected to be among the best in the Big East. While it's been OK, it hasn't forced a turnover against a Division I team all year, and it's let down in the second half in most of the team's losses. Of course, when it came through with a huge stop on a late WVU fourth down a week ago, the offense couldn't make it work anyway and wasted the chance. If Greg Schiano's club doesn't turn it around soon, the whole season will go down as a waste for those who were expecting better. The Bearcats are down to their fourth-string quarterback, and home or away this is a game a top team should win. If Rutgers can't come through this week, with a trip to South Florida on tap, the team will face an even more toxic atmosphere from the fan base at home and have no margin for error the rest of the way if it hopes to make even the most minor of bowl games.
