Media crazy (in love) with Psycho T

The media loves Tough Whiteness, too. Never mind that college basketball is full of blue collar, intense African-American players with more desire than ability. And forget the fact that Hansbrough is an excellent, highly skilled athlete, more Larry Johnson than Rudy Ruettiger.

None of that matters. The media sees the tough white guy with the bloodied nose, scrunched up face and Hannibal Lecter mannerisms and falls in lust.

Bill Raftery is an admirable professional who is one of my favorites to watch. He's extremely talented, but during a timeout in one North Carolina game, he said "watching Tyler Hansbrough listen is special."

What? No, seriously, what?

I thought the media had gotten beyond the "black-guy-talented, white-guy-tough" silliness, but the coverage around Hansbrough demonstrates maybe we haven't.

This is nothing against Hansbrough. He's one of my favorites. He'll probably end up as a slightly better than average NBA player -- there are a thousand Hansbroughs in professional basketball -- but that doesn't take away from the good things he's doing now.

This is the media's fault, not Hansbrough's.

So we'll continue to portray Hansbrough as the savior of life, liberty and pursuit of everything college basketball. An All-American bad ass.

Tyler Hansbrough inspires so much fear, Bill Belichick is afraid to videotape Hansbrough's walkthroughs. ...

When it rains Tyler Hansbrough doesn't get wet ... the rain scampers away in fear. ...

This is not an attempt at spamming anyone, I am just posting a link to another CBS thread, because I know a lot of fans on this board were irked by MIke Freeman's recent comments about Tyler Hansbrough.

If you're interested, this is the thread. It has links to the articles in question (inclding this one and others), as well as a couple of courses of action I am asking people

Rush Limbaugh said almost the exact same thing about Donovan McNabb, and about 24 hours later was out of a job. Now Freeman can come on here with this hate speech without any fear of repercussions. Hmmm, I wonder why...

In my opinion, Hansborough has a very good chance to be as successful as Eduardo Najera at the next level.

Najera's not a star, but he's a valued member of every team he's on.  He gives all-out effort all the time and has enough talent to contribute while he's doing it.

Mike,

I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion that "Psycho-T" is a media darling creation, but the race argument didn't need to be included to make your point.  I remember a time when Air Jordan was the face of basketball for the entire world at every level of competition; an unbelievably gifted/talented black man who no one would dare claim wasn't tough as well. ...(more)

Mr. Freeman, I don't normally like your columns and often disagree; however, on this occasion you have absolutely nailed it.  The sad part is that, I am a diehard Carolina fan.  The reality is, I have never witnessed a player with average skills receive so much hype in my life.   I mean I love Carolina winning, I love Ha ...(more)

Hey Freeman, once the Euros and South Americans get done with it all the only sport left for the pro black athlete will be the NFL. They've long since been run out of major league baseball. Fact....

But you're actually right on this one, even if the whole article sucked

You can't think of a black player that has been the face of college basketball ever? How about KD as recently as last season. The reason Hansbrough is incredibly overhyped has everything to do with him playing for UNC and absolutely nothing to do with him being white
