Where PETA went wrong: It opened its mouth

In an alternate universe, PETA is a great idea. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals? Sounds great to me. If you're a person and you're not for the ethical treatment of animals, you're not a person after all. You're subhuman. You're vermin.

Reasonable or unreasonable, PETA's calling for Gabriel Saez's suspension falls on deaf ears. (Getty Images)
Reasonable or unreasonable, PETA's calling for Gabriel Saez's suspension falls on deaf ears. (Getty Images)
But in this universe, PETA isn't a great idea. PETA is an insult to rational animal lovers, me included, because PETA makes us look bad. PETA is to animal lovers what polygamist Warren Jeffs is to religion or what narcissist Al Sharpton is to civil rights -- a distortion of reality, a divisive and polarizing land mine planted under one of society's most vulnerable sidewalks.

On Saturday, a horse died after running the Kentucky Derby. Shortly after finishing second, Eight Belles suffered two broken ankles. It was a catastrophic breakdown, an immediate death sentence, and she was killed right there on the track.

It was awful, a reason to list horse racing as one of those divisive land mines I mentioned in the second paragraph. Just to be clear where I stand on the death of a racehorse, here you go. I stand mortified. I stand appalled.

But I don't stand with PETA. And if you're PETA, this should make you question your organization -- because in an alternate universe, I'm perfect PETA material. I have two dogs and two cats, and I carry on conversations with all of them. Each has its own voice, played by me. It's endearing or embarrassing, and I don't care which adjective you prefer. They're part of my family, so dammit I'm going to talk to them. Even if I have to talk for them. Hell, on long drives I'll carry on entire conversations with my dogs ... when they're not even in the car. Am I crazy? Sure. For animals.

But PETA makes me sick.

Its latest affront to rationality came Sunday, one day after the demise of Eight Belles, when PETA issued a press release seeking the suspension of Eight Belles' jockey, Gabriel Saez. Why? Because Eight Belles was "doubtlessly injured before the finish."

This is so PETA. People matter less than the animal. Gabriel Saez? He just got thrown under the PETA bus. There are people out there -- 1.8 million PETA members worldwide, plus lots of lemmings -- who want to blame someone for Eight Belles' death. They'll follow PETA's lead and blame the jockey.

Here's all you need to know about that jockey. When it was over, when Eight Belles had stumbled to the ground and been diagnosed with two broken ankles and been put to sleep in a whirlwind of horror, Gabriel Saez was psychologically demolished. It happened so quickly that Eight Belles' trainer, Larry Jones, didn't know his filly was dead until he saw Saez riding another horse to the stables.

Here's what the shattered Saez said to his trainer:

"Mr. Larry, they had to put us down."

Us.

That's the jockey, the person, PETA wants you to vilify.

I'd say PETA wants to throw out the baby with the bathwater, but PETA doesn't care about babies. Unless it's a baby wombat.

There it is in a nutshell.  Doyel, you're a conservative even though you claim to be a flaming liberal. PETA is all about equating animal life with human life (in most cases elevating above) to systematically

I normally don;t agree with most of the stuff that Gregg Doyel writes, but he hit this nail RIGHT ON THE HEAD! He is able to expose PETA as the flithy, worthless, flaming hypocrites they really are! They do absolutely nothing fproductive or this country! NOTHING! Why hey even exist as an organization is an enigma in itself! So, Bravo Doyel!

PETA needs to play by the rules they expect others to live by, namely fairness.  Knee-jerk reactions and baseless accusations without the facts all in just makes them look even more ridiculous than they already do.

PETA could deliver a sane message and be an impetus to safer more humane conditions for racehorses. Instead PETA swings past intelligent debate and reasonable claims for change and gallops right into the land of lunacy. Congratulations PETA, you're the first to cross the Lunatic Line in this race.

First, again, yes it was a tragedy.  But, trying to cover all the points here, 2 deaths in 1,000 are not bad odds for the horse.  You mean to tell me that, in the same time exposure that those 1,000 races cover, there aren't more than two horses breaking ankles and having to be put down on cattle ranches out west, horseback riding on trails and in mountains??  Sorry, no ...(more)

Just promise that PETA will continue to send out hot nude (female) protestors. That's good stuff.

The problem I have with PETA is that they called out this jockey with no proof or an inkling that he pushed the horse while knowing it was injurred as they have stated. When the PETA rep who visited the Mike Tericho show (ESPN RADIO) yesterday was asked what evidence PETA had that the jockey did this she couldn't answer, was fumbling her words,  and started reading from her scipt ...(more)

Watch the video of the end of the race.  At the line, Eight Belles had her ears up, and was galloping out.  There was nothing wrong with that filly during the race.  What happened was a tragedy, but blaming the jock is beyond ridiculous.

By standing on the track as they come down the home stretch.

Probably would help the horses get traction as they ran them over, and establish a new racing surface - PETA grass.

Mr. Doyle,

The stat of almost 2 horses per 1000 races is wrong.  The actual stat is 1.6 horses are put down per 1000 runners.  Given an average field of 8 horses per race that would be 1.6 horses per 125 races, not 1000.  Or one horse per 78 races.  At a track like Keeneland that has 18 racing days per meet (AVG 10 races a day) that would be about 2.5 for the me ...(more)

I normally dislike a lot of the editorials written by Doyel and Freeman, but he hit the nail on the head on this one. PETA is a ridiculous vocal minority that is all about power and hatred. They should change their name to People for the Unethical Treatment of Humans.

And since when is extremely dry sarcasm appropriate for a formal letter of request? Those narcissistic idiots must t

We can all just agree to ignore PETA.  PETA isn't the problem.  Racing horses for entertainment so they can be killed if they get injured is the problem.  And no, I'm not a crazy animal rights activist; far from it.  I'm all for hunting, in fact, especially to thin out populations whose natural predators are chased away (wolves in Massachusetts, for example, are long gone so th ...(more)
