For Kentucky fringe, love morphs into lunacy

Crazy has come to Kentucky, but don't fool yourself there in Kansas or California or the Carolinas or wherever it is you call home. Crazy could come to your house, too. Crazy knows no borders, and when the crazy that has come to Kentucky creeps into your yard, maybe you'll remember this story and try to stay sane.

But I doubt it.

That's the thing about crazy: It's plain as day from the outside, but on the inside? Where crazy is common? Undetectable. Incomprehensible. Crazy? Us? Crazy is for other people. Not us.

Yes you, Kentucky basketball fans.

You've gone crazy. And you've gone crazy in a way that has sent me over the edge.

See, I've seen this sort of thing before. Normally I bite my tongue, but enough is enough. Most fans are reasonable -- loyal as a Labrador, but reasonable -- but the tail that wags this dog is completely nuts. The lunatic fringe of any fan base can make or break its entire reputation.

And Kentucky, you've been broken.

Sorry. Crazy has risen to the top, like curdled cream, and if you're not in that big blue lunatic fringe, take it up with those who are. They're the ones making you look ridiculous by turning on a local newspaper, and the reporter who covers the UK men's basketball team, in a way that literally is bordering on criminal.

In recent days the publisher of one of the most prominent websites devoted to UK athletics, www.kentucky.rivals.com, posted a message that decried "some really inappropriate and borderline criminal comments" written by UK fans about the Lexington Herald-Leader's UK beat writer, Jerry Tipton.

"We have removed dozens of topics that violated board rules and others that just went beyond the grounds of human decency ..." publisher Jeff Drummond wrote. "There have been threats of bodily harm, threats of property damage and even death threats. To me, that's a sad and pathetic commentary on a certain segment of our fan base."

It's difficult to pinpoint where this all began, because Tipton has been covering UK basketball for 27 years. As the best reporters do -- and Tipton is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame -- he has written stories that angered the school and its fans. So has the Herald-Leader as a staff, including the Pulitzer-winning expose of Eddie Sutton's scummy program in the 1980s.

Angry fans have long memories. So this explosion of crazy has been building for years. All it needed was a spark.

An Internet recruiting writer provided it.

Doyle, give us all a break and report about the national news that you are somehow getting paid to write. You are the worst writer I have read on the national level. I love CBSSports.co but you have to step up your game or go to one of those local Web sites that you claim to hate. Hey maybe that Maggard guy can give you a job, or call that other guy Tipton. Give us a break and report on real sport ...(more)

Doyel, a few dozen psycho fans that have way to much free time and no life, do not speak for an entire fan base; however, apparently Greg Doyel speaks for all non-UK fans (the rest of the world).  Doyel, you have just turned over another rock.  When a journalist that needs some attention starts spewing libel like saliva, thats when "legitimate" media ceases to exist.

Wow, nothing like taking a local story and publishing it on a national website.

Look no disrespect to UK fans but the rest of us don't give a flying hoot about your internal squabbles.  We only care about Kentucky when they are showing Ashley Judd in the stands.

I agree completely, Tipton has always been anti-UK....i don't just mean a UK fan saying someone that is trying to be objective is anti-UK, but I mean he has crossed the line beyond responsible journalism many times in the ten-fifteen years I have been subjected to his headlines in the Herald-Leader.

As for the websites, I am not a member, and think for the most part there are great ...(more)

This is by far the worst article that I have read on this website. If you do not like an organization or their fan base, that is fine. If you do not like a subgroup of people within a larger group of people, that is fine also. Whoever went overboard and made inappropriate comments should be condemned. But you sir just called UK fans lunatics. Not like, those UK ...(more)

Wow, this will probably be read by a bunch of Kentucky Ink members and at least 5 other people. Never had any idea that Kentucky has some crazy basketball fans. Let me guess, tomorrow you'll break the news on Alabama football fans.....

I love reading Doyles articles, he's up front and honest.  That's what I love about him.  I'm a member of KYink's website, and have read the post's regarding Tipton.

First, Maggard didn't set UK fans against Tipton with that post.  UK fans have been against Tipton for a very long time, many years in fact.  I realize in journalism, it's the ...(more)
