Arkansas State board approves Red Wolves as new nickname

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Arkansas State's athletic teams will be called the Red Wolves starting this fall, ending nearly eight decades of being known as the Indians.

The school's Board of Trustees ratified the nickname after Chancellor Robert Potts recommended it, the university announced Friday.

Arkansas State has used Indians as a nickname since 1931. In 2005, the NCAA announced a ban on ethnically or racially "hostile" or "abusive" nicknames, mascots and imagery at championship events. Arkansas State was one of the schools found in violation of the policy.

The school had narrowed the replacement choices to Wolves and Red Wolves -- and Potts preferred the latter.

"This would make our choice unique, and much easier to protect under intellectual property law," Potts said in a statement. "The red wolf is a noble species that once inhabited Arkansas. They are vicious and very aggressive. I believe that Red Wolves is the best choice and that is the mascot that we would like to adopt."

The school will host a ceremony introducing the new mascot next Thursday.

I'll admit, I did once think that these rulings were just plain stupid. I can see where supporters of this side of the argument are coming from. Their main points:
  • Who cares?
  • It's just a name.
  • Waste of time and money.
Yeah, it seems pretty lame. Why would they spend so much time attempting to change na

are ever asked to change their mascot, the could just keep their name and put a picture of a red-skinned potato on their helmet.

Seriously though, I hope this ridiculousness doesn't pervade professional sports mascots.  In fact, I feel that the Blackhawks logo is a classic and respectful portrayal of a Native American.

They play in Indian Stadium. Will they change the name to Red Wolf Stadium, or maybe look for corporate sponsorship for it?

Umm to be honest I didn't even know Arkansas State's mascot was an Indian until I read these posts.  But really people when is enough enough with this kind of petty stuff?  It's a freaking mascot.  Who cares?  Is it really offensive that a university would want to represent the native Americans by choosing their name over say, a Tiger or a Lion.  If it was misrepresenting ...(more)

(POLL)

Some of these rulings make sense.  Some don't.  Some people agree.  Some don't.  This super-scientific sportsline.com poll will put this arguement for bed once and for all.

What do you think of the NCAA policy against insensitive nicknames

The various terms used to name teams after Indians (Early Americans from Russia & Asia) were used to show Bravery, Fighting Spirit and Strength.  Who would want that?

The Early Americans will soon be all but an * in a history book that isn't taught anymore.  If it was me I would have wanted to hold on to some relevence in popular culture, but I guess it is their decisi ...(more)
