Validated Garcia tops Goydos in playoff to win TPC

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Sunday at Sawgrass felt tougher on Sergio Garcia than what he faced last summer at the British Open, a playoff loss that seemed to define a career filled with more talent than trophies.

He was tormented by a suspect putter. He heard questions whether he could win a big one.

Sergio finds the mark and confidence at right time

All that changed in the final hour of the Players Championship thanks to two clutch putts, a wedge that found safety on an island and a playoff victory that Garcia desperately needed.

The best player without a major got the next best thing, making a seven-foot par putt that put him in a playoff, then beating Paul Goydos on the notorious island-green 17th with a wedge into four feet and a putt he could afford to miss after Goydos hit into the water.

"It feels like a major, and it tests you like a major," Garcia said. "I'm so thrilled to be here standing with the trophy."

It was a long time coming.

Garcia was in the longest victory drought of his career, stretching over three years and 53 starts on the PGA Tour. Motivated by criticism of his putting, he rolled in one critical putt after another, none bigger than a slippery par putt on the final hole for a 1-under 71.

It put him in a playoff when Goydos missed a 15-foot par putt in the final group behind him.

The first playoff in 21 years at the Players didn't last long. Goydos, hitting first, watched helplessly as a gust caused his wedge to balloon into the cloudy skies and land with a splash a few feet in front of the green.

Garcia, with no margin for error, followed with a wedge that landed on the green, caught a slope and stopped four feet away. He missed the birdie putt, but it didn't matter.

Goydos wound up with a double bogey and a horrible coincidence.

There were 65 balls hit into the water during the tournament. Goydos was the first to deposit one in the opening round Thursday, and the last at the worst possible time in a sudden-death playoff.

For a guy with only two victories in his career, Goydos was abundantly gracious in defeat.

It is amazing to me that Sergio is only 28. It seems like he has been on tour forever. It also seems like a long time ago when he pulled off the shot at Medinah and finished second.

Hopefully this win brings out many more victories. He still has a lot of years ahead of him.

Oh, and nice paycheck for the win. How about the purse this week? Goydos cleared a million for second!

First off, nice win Sergio.  I met him about 7 years ago and he was a nice kid and I've followed his career ever since and I'm happy to see him win a big one.  Can he win a major now?  We will have to wait and see.  Can he take his confidence with his putter that he had on Sunday into the Open?  Again, we will have to wait and see.  It was good to see him a ...(more)

Sure was pleasant to watch golf for a change this weekend. Thank God we were not force fed Tiger Woods for the whole tournament.  I'm sure the all Tiger tour will be back soon....maybe he will come up with another reason to miss the US open so we can enjoy that too !

That a boy Sergio. It's about time that you won a major. Now, you can shut up some of your critics. You deserved to win, leading the field in just about all stats. Everyone cannot blame your putting anymore. Sawgrass is a tough place to putt, and you made a huge putt there on 18. Hopefully your win will lead to others with the huge boost of confidence. It's nice to see someone new win a major so t ...(more)

Congrats to Sergio and all that but don't think this win will somehow take him to the next level. He finished this tournament LAST in putting, how he won is somewhat of a miracle.

Yes the Players is the 5th major, but putt like that in any of the big four and you will not win. I honestly dont see Sergio winning a major for still quite a long time.....

Thoughts??

It's nice to see Sergio finally win a major. It's been a long time coming. This win will hopefully make upcoming majors more enjoyable to watch. We need rivalries in golf. Tiger Woods and David Duval seemed to be the last good rivalry, seeing that the Tiger and Phil and Tiger and Vijay never panned out. This win can push you to a new level of golf, which is very nice to see. Way to go!!
