Stuck for a Father's Day idea? If he's a golfer, you're good

Earlier this week, the U.S. Golf Association deadline for gaining exempt entry into the U.S. Open came to a close. Which, for those keeping scorecards at home, means just one thing:

Father's Day is on the horizon.

Yes, the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines also is upcoming, scheduled June 12-15 in La Jolla, Calif. But along with that event, the final round Sunday each year overlaps with another important occasion, America's celebration of Father's Day.

Which got us to thinking: There's still time to get that special gift we've been too busy to attend to, until now. The selection of golf-related gift items has never been greater, from clubs and balls, to apparel and artwork, videogames, instruction books and many other unique accessories. There are quite a few 2008 U.S. Open items available, too.

Just take a tour through the golf segment at many sports merchandising websites and you are sure to come away with a bagful of possibilities for that special father, grandfather, brother, uncle or just plain golfing guy.

Not including clubs and balls, which we highlight year-round, here's a select shopping list of interesting gift ideas at various price levels to help you choose just the right item. Most online orders ship within several days.

Under $25

Jumping Golf Tees Puzzle: Classic jumping and removing golf tees puzzle game. Solid pine wood puzzle base, 15 wooden tees, booklet. Challenging, and lots of endless fun. $6.99; www.gamesbyjames.biz.

The Right Sticks : Written by club designer and clubfitter Tom Wishon with co-author Tom Grundner, this book is a "must read" for anyone who plays golf. Subtitled: Equipment myths that could wreck your game. The book is controversial, thought-provoking and, at times, astounding. Key targets attacked include the USGA and major equipment makers. Among the many "myths" addressed: "The higher a clubhead's moment of inertia, the straighter the shot," "the bigger the head, the better a driver will perform," "the faster you swing, the stiffer your shaft should be," "there are significant differences among golf balls," and more. A fascinating, easy read. $14.95 (152 pages, Ann Arbor Media Group); bookstores, Web sites.

Novelty headcovers: A popular and personal showpiece that also helps with club recognition. Available for various NCAA schools and NFL teams. Cute, durable animal headcovers include gopher, moose, alligator, gorilla, Rottweiller, golden retriever. $14.99-29.99; www.cbssportsstore.com.

PC golf game: "Infamous 18," from About Golf, is immensely detailed fantasy golf game based on the paintings of renowned artist Bud Chapman; in addition to "Infamous 18," includes play on Teeth of the Dog and Myrtle Beach courses; real-life action, and lots of fun. $19.95; AboutGolf.com.

Clubhouse gift pack: Neatly packaged collection includes shoe bag, golf towel, cleaning brush, balls, tees, ball markers, divot tool. From Golf Gifts & Gallery. $24.99; cbssportssstore.com.
