1) The point of this was not to rank the players by their world golf ranking, it was to give a different perspective based off of past U. S. Open appearances, past play at Torrey Pines, and their 2008 seasons along with a few hunches I might have. Ryuji Imada played well at the 2008 Buick Invitational, I just have a feeling he can play well and that's why he's #6. I know that will be a guy I will hear a lot about.
2) This preview was the hardest thing I've ever done. I hope you guys like it.
3) If you have any comments please post them all. Constructive criticism is a great writing tool. If you want to know anything more about this preview please PM me.
4) Also I will be blogging the U. S. Open live right here Thursday-Sunday. I need some good feedback questions. if anyone has any in mind PLEASE let me know. The best way to send me your questions is through email, to dantheman4250@aol.com.
Here's the rankings:
1. Tiger Woods: I'm not sure how Tiger will recover from his knee surgery but I do know he has dominated at Torrey Pines the last five times he played the Buick Invitational there. Woods has got to be everybody's favorite this week.
Appearaces: 13
Best Finish: Won (Twice)
Best Round: 65 (2000)
2. Phil Mickelson: Phil has still never won a U. S. Open, but takes another shot this week at Torrey Pines. Last year at Oakmont his wrist injury bothered him. This year he's once again the sentimental favorite.
Appearances: 17
Best Finish: T-2 (4 times)
Best Round: 66 (2004)
3. Jim Furyk: Furyk hits it straight and plays solid golf. That's why he is always one of the favorites to win the U. S. Open. Expect him to contend on Sunday.
Appearances: 13
Best Finish: Won (2003)
Best Round: 66 (2003)
4. Retief Goosen: Goosen is always a favorite at U. S. Opens, having already won two. He has not played extremely well this year but should be in contention.
Appearances: 10
Best Finish: Won (2 times)
Best Round: 66 (2001, 2004)
5. Geoff Ogilvy: Well Ogilvy has won the U. S. Open once in his career, when he won at Winged Foot after Mickelson fell apart. He's very inconsistent but should contend this week.
Appearances: 4
Best Finish: 2006
Best Round: 70 (2006)
6. Ryuji Imada: Let's just say that this is a hunch. Imada has won this year already and finished second at Torrey Pines at the Buick Invitational when Tiger won by an incredible eight shots.
Appearances: 4
Best Finish: T-12
Best Round: 68 (2005)
7. Sergio Garcia: Garcia has two top fives in his eight U. S. Open appearances but has struggled in the others. The Spaniard has missed the cut the last two times he teed it up at the Open, but his win at the Players Championship has me believing he might have the confidence to contend here.
Appearances: 8
Best Finish: T-3 (2005)
