Sports Injuries

Posted on: April 10, 2008 3:17 pm

After watching the highlight of Michael McDowell roll over and over in his crash in NASCAR and get out and wave, I thought this would be a good blog topic.  We have all seen the highlights of injuries over and over.  Who can forget the ABC Wide World of Sports skiing crash if you have seen it?  There are many others: Joe Theismann's leg, Jason Kendall's ankle, Tyler Hansbrough's nose, etc, etc.

The one thing constant in sports is that if you watch them or play them, somehow, some way, some time, someone is going to get hurt.  Just the nature of the beast.

On a personal injury note, I have several.  I am not a big guy, but I give it my all.  I am 5'10" and about 155.  I am a scrappy, throw it out there kind of guy and I love the game of basketball and this is where most of my injuries have come from...

My list:

  • basketball training - 2 stitches in mid front lower leg as I didn't quite get my left leg up on the brick wall and it bit right in
  • 4 stitches in nose as I came down on another guys head after a rebound (they had to pull his hair out of the cut in order to stitch it up)
  • 12 stitches inside right corner of mouth (nice elbow I took)
  • broken nose learning how to bunt a baseball (ball is not supposed to come off the top of the bat back into your face I guess)
  • scars from cuts playing with idiots who don't cut their fingernails (in fact my blood is soaked into one gym that had carpet)
  • my knees are mostly just scar tissue from back yard football
  • two chipped teeth (basketball elbows again)
  • rolled ankles (various sports, but I finally just bought the air cast)
  • microfiber surgery in my left knee on April 18, 2007 from 25 years of wear and tear that I am still trying to rehab and recover the spring.

So that's it for now and hopefully that is it for the rest of my life, but likely not if I can get my knee back in shape.  If anyone has any pointers on how to get that spring back, please let me know, but as for the rest, let's hear what you got.

Sports Injuries

I forgot one...it is a common injury, but I broke my thumb on a ski jump at Keystone in 1992...flew about 20 feet and didn't quite stick the landing.  Compound break - doc said it was the
