Nationals Park from a different point of view

I gave a review of Nat's Park on opening day a few weeks ago.  We sat in U222 against the wall in the furthest section of the nosebleeds the first time around.  We nearly froze, but the game was great as the Nat's won 3-2 on a walk off HR against the Braves.  Saturday I had my 2nd chance to get a look at the park from a different perspective.

The good:  This time around we got seats in Washington Suite 8 thanks to my fiance's work connections.  They were seriously the best seats in the house.  Directly behind home plate.  Free drinks and dogs.  Granite bars and countertops at our seats.  The seats were pretty similar to flying first class, although we barely sat in them.  Great views of the ball park.  The cherry trees were in full bloom and the park itself was in great condition.  It was also great to have a parking pass.  The Metro has done a good job so far of getting people to and from the game, but sometimes it's just nice to drive and avoid the crowd.

The bad:  The game was delayed about 90 minutes due to rain.  The game itself was horrible.  The Nat's gave up 4 runs in the 1st on the way to a 10-2 loss to the Braves.  Our host wasn't very happy about the service, although I thoroughly enjoyed the free Yuengling.  A lot of people in the suite were more concerned about their work connections than the game itself, which is understandable considering the way the Nat's played.

Overall I enjoyed seeing the other side of Nationals Park.  If only the team was a little more competitive.  9 losses in a row and counting.

Opening Day at Nationals Park

I went to the inagural game at Nationals Park last night and just wanted to share my thoughts on the whole experience.

Negatives:

  • It was a very late start (8:05pm)
  • The Metro workers were everywhere and yelling at everyone as soon as we stepped off at the Navy Yard station.
  • Protesters against Bush were outside when we reached the Metro exit.
  • The lines into the ballpark were slow because of the metal detectors (for Bush)
  • They would not let us to our seats because of something to do with the fireworks, so we had to watch all of the opening ceremony standing behind seats in the consession area.
  • The opera singer for the national anthem was earsplitting.
  • The crowd mostly cheered Bush, but the boo birds were louder.
  • The consession stands were very disorganized.
  • Half of the TVs in the concession area had Big Brother on.  I guess they forgot to change the TVs from CBS after Kansas won.
  • The view of the capital was partially blocked by a new building going up.
  • It was very, very, very cold.
  • I had to leave in the 8th because I went with my fiance, her best friend, and her friend's boyfriend.  The girls got cold.  We missed probably the best finish in Nats history.

Positives:

  • The Ballpark was beautiful.
  • The President was there.
  • The game was awesome.
  • The fans were pumped up and decked out in Nats gear.
  • The players were pumped up.
  • I got a sweet inagural game towel.
  • Lots of concessions to choose from.
  • The HD screen in centerfield is AWESOME!
  • They named it Nationals Park instead of some corporate name.
  • The Metro got everyone to and from the game without too much hassle.
  • Lots of amenities that I didn't even have time to check out this time.

Lots of room for improvement, but I definitely enjoyed the game.  I can't wait to go back and catch another game...but I think I'll wait for the weather to warm up a little first.

About Sports in the Pacific Northwest
As a lifelong fan of all things good in the PNW I think it is only appropriate that my first blog focus on the exciting, but often painful relationship between the teams in the PNW and their diehard fans. So many great moments, yet so few championships. That is the life that PNW sports fans have learned to accept. Since my birth in 1982 the only major sports championship that I have ever been able to celebrate was provided courtesy of the 1991 Washington Huskies led by Steve Emtman, Billy Joe Hobert, Mario Bailey, and Lincoln Kennedy. Even their crowning achievement was spilt with the overrated media grubbing clowns down in Miami. On a smaller scale I was able to celebrate two national titles with my alma mater, the University of Portland. However, you have to ask yourself, "if you win two national titles in woman's soccer and your best player was a mannish Canadian, does anybody really care?" Fortunately for those of us lucky enough to grow up in the PNW not every great moment has to be defined by a championship. The Magical Mariner Ride in '95 will never be forgotten. 13 games back on August 13th, the Mariners came back to tie the Angels and then defeat them in a one game playoff. They then went on to win one of the most exciting division series' in history by knocking out the Yankees in extra innings of game 5. Everyone remembers 116 wins in '01, but for most fans the comeback in '95 was so much sweeter. The Sonics under George Karl were contenders year in and year out. The '96 crew led by Payton, Kemp, Perkins, and Schrempf were so close. Unfortunately they ran into a Bulls team that went 72-10. The Seahawks...I can't even bring up Super Bowl XL without cursing, but what a season they had in '05. It's been a good r
