Watching the All-Star game made me a little sad. I loved seeing Brandon Roy get all that playing time and he played great. But watching him play along side Chris Paul in the backcourt made me realize just how huge that missed opportunity was a few years ago.
The last couple drafts for the Blazers have been outstanding. But I'm afraid their draft 3 years ago will haunt them for the next 15 years. Maybe not as much as the Jordan draft, but passing on Chris Paul for Webster & Jack has to be one of the biggest blunders in Blazers draft history.
It's hard not to wonder how much fun a starting lineup of Paul, Roy, Outlaw, Aldridge & Oden would have been. Thrown in a bench of Sergio, Rudy, James Jones, Frye & Przybilla and this team would be an instant contender starting next year.
I've heard rumors of the Blazers going after Paul as a free agent. I doubt Paul would leave the up and coming Hornets, but you never know. Maybe they could atone for their blunder and get that lineup afterall. Or maybe they could package Webster, Jack, Blake and their lottery draft pick next year in some kind of trade for a point guard. I doubt they would be able to trade for Paul or Deron Williams, but maybe someone like Andre Miller would be available to trade for. Miller's no Paul or Williams, but he's a very good distributer and would add some nice experience to the young nucleus.
I guess for now I'll just have to settle watching Paul & Roy play together every year during the All-Star game. But it sure would have been nice if the Blazers hadn't screwed up that draft 3 years ago. They might be working on a potential dynasty as it is, but whatever they are working on it's not as good as if they had also drafted Chris Paul. He's the best point guard in the league, and will be for the next 15 years!! And he should have been a Blazer.

i agree, it makes me cringe to think about how scary of a team we would've had if we picked up paul. i think that we are in desperate need of a point guard that can push ROY to play harder. as a die hard blazers fan it's frustrating to see them tear off 13 almost 17 wins in a row and now just walk around the court and get out worked.
paul will be a blazers if pritchard has one more trick up his sleeve.
GO BLAZERS!!!!!!

Don't worry...Paul or Deron with be in Portland soon enough. We will have a boat load of cap room in 2 years and the Blazers will be the 'it' team. Any point guard would salivate to play with Roy, Oden, Aldridge and company.

I'm more into picking up Paul and drafting Derrick Rose from Memphis, his game is on point and is going to be another Paul. On the other hand Paul is going to ask for a lot of money and we need to lock up Roy, Oden and Aldridge for the next 10 years.

If things were different and we had gotten Paul, it does not logically follow that we would have still necessarily picked up Roy and Oden.
(If one thing were to change, more things that follow would likely change as well.)

You can thank Portland's previous GM for missing out on Chris Paul or Deron Williams.
The reason? We picked "playground legend" PG Sebatian Telfair in the 2004 draft so instead of picking a PG in the 2005 draft when we had #3 pick and could have taken Chris Paul or Deron Williams, we traded out of that pick with Utah and got the #6 pick and took Martell Webster, another high school phenom with questionable NBA talent.
Then, when we had a GM who knew what he was doing, we suckered Boston into taking Telfair for the #7 pick in 2006, which we traded for #6 Brandon Roy. We took LaMarcus Aldridge with our "hard-earned" #2 pick.
Chances are, if we hadn't taken Telfair in 2004 and instead took anyone else besides a PG (Al Jefferson, Delonte West, etc.), we would have had either Chris Paul or Deron Williams the following year. We still would have had a reasonably high draft pick in 2005 because we would have still sucked (maybe not quite as bad), so it could be argued that we would have been around the #6 pick instead of #2 and could have taken Brandon Roy.
So, in the final analysis, even though we recouped some of our losses from drafting Telfair by trading for Roy, if we had passed on Telfair like we should have, we would have most likely had Chris Paul or Deron Williams and EITHER LaMarcus Aldridge OR Brandon Roy. I would much rather have the latter, perhaps with Brandon Roy and the drafting of Al Jefferson instead of Sebastian Telfair in 2004.
However, if if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas

If we had drafted Chris Paul and then gotten Roy or Aldridge the next year we probally would have never picked up Greg Oden.
Greg Oden is way more important to us than Chris Paul will ever be IMO.
