That's the first I'm hearing of that. I know that's been the word on the street for a couple of years now, but Schaino has turned down Miami & Michigan. There is no way he's going to Penn St. for a number of reasons
1--You don't want to be the guy that follows the legend. If anything you want to be the 2nd guy.
2nd--Why follow a legend when you can make your own. Schaino has turned a program that was once one the worse in the country into a legetimite football team. Given a couple of more years he could really be onto something big here.
3rd--and finally, is Penn st really that much better than Rutgers right now. I know their reputation is, but over the last 3 years Rutgers has been every bit as good and Penn St. and we're only getting better.

Schiano has PSU ties from early in his coaching career and has a good relationship with JoePa and Tom Bradley. He has also spoken with our AD on more than one occassion over the last couple years.
As for on the same level as Rutgers??? Rutgers went 8-5 this past year, and did not look good doing it...
One good year between two mediocre years does not put you at the same level of PSU who happens to be 31-9 in their last 40 games which is good for 8th best in the nation...

I'm not trying to take a stab at Rutgers, because Schiano has really turned things around and demanded respect for the program...but there is no way that you can compare Rutgers recent 3 year rise to Penn State. I'm sorry, but there is just no way to say that the two are even or anywhere close to it.

Who's says it will only be a three-year rise? Since Schiano arrived they have been regularly taking the majority of the best recruits from New York and other nearby states. They have a relatively settled team (which admittedly would have been stronger if Ray Rice had com back) with a solid prospect at QB in Teel and a steady O-line and receiving corps.
Further, the athletic committee seem willing to improve the programme to keep him at the helm and to increase his pay - apart from his PSU ties (which no-one can really gauge the strength of), what reason would there be for him to choose stability for uncertainty? Rich Rodriguez left WVU when he had burned all the bridges available in trying to improve the programme and his own position; Schiano is not in the same position by any stretch of the imagination.
Penn State has a great history at certain positions (LB most notably) yet it has struggled to keep a high standard of recruits as JoePa has got older. Now they face the problem of not having an exceptional team to wow recruits nor a coach who's a top recruiter in his prime. Do you think that if Penn St was a premier programme that Terrelle Pryor (who's from Pennsylvania) would have three other schools (OSU, Mich, Oregon) ahead of it?

He has also turned down more lucrative opportunities in the last 2 years. No offense to PSU, but it's not Michigan. I can't say if it's a more lucrative offer then Miami, but Schiano has ties to Miami that are as strong, if not stronger then his ties with PSU.
I can't say I know that Schiano won't leave, because PSU has been called his "dream job" on many occasions from 2001-2004, but barring a 5-7, 6-6 type season, I doubt he goes anywhere.

Ah the tradition argument. No way you can compare Rutgers to Penn State. Yes, there is. Compare them now. Not ten years ago. Not throughout their history. Not in 1869 when Rutgers played their first game. Now. What do you see? Recruiting. Penn State 40th, Rutgers 41st. 2007 Record - Penn State 9-4, Rutgers 8-5. 2006 Record - Penn State 9-4, Rutgers 11-2. End of year ranking 2007 Penn State 27, Rutgers 39. End of year ranking 2006 Penn State 24, Rutgers 12.
Don't get me wrong. Penn State's done it for a long time and is a consistent top 20 team. Rutgers has not proven it's a consistent, big time winner yet. Schiano can have a huge part in that. But if you are looking at what's in the cupboard today, and are not blinded by how good Penn State has been and how bad Rutgers has been the teams right now are more comparable than many believe. If you look at where the teams are now, Scarlet Nation's comment is not off the mark.
Now the question for Schiano is, he's built a decent team, can he sustain it? As for Schianno "crawling" to Penn State, I don't see it, unless he feels he's not getting the support at Rutgers he need to win a NC. If that happens, he's at Happy Valley in a heartbeat.

Turned down more lucrative offers? Are you kidding? Penn State is right there with Michigan and Ohio State at the head of college football's second tier powers. As for the comment about crawling to Penn State, Schiano is the one who made it.

I think that if PSU would offer the head coaching position to Schiano after Paterno retires he would seriously consider it. Whether he accepts it will certainly be contingent on Rutgers ability to sustain this level of football that they are currently enjoying. I don't personally think you can compare PSU to Rutgers but I'm obviously partial and still remember the days of Rutgers being a cake walk game.
However, I'm glad that those days are behind us and that they are becoming a powerhouse program. I hope that Schiano doesn't come to PSU when Paterno leaves. One reason is that he's not my personal choice (as if it matters) for our next coach, but more importantly because I want him to stay and turn Rutgers into an East Coast powerhouse. I'm hoping that his ties to PSU play dividends by us being able to get a long-tern series started with RU OOC. I think that a strong East Coast rivalry for PSU-RU would hopefully only help both of us in terms of recruiting and keep some of this region's talent from going south/west to college to play ball.
I wish Rutgers the best and hope Schiano will stay long term. I hope you fans get to experience the joys/headaches of having a coach as long as we have at Penn State. One who has put the program on the national map, won NC's, mentored multiple other coaches and earned the respect of true fans of college football nationwide.
