JoePa is one win behind Bobby Bowden for the all time Div 1 record.  Is this the reason why both stay.....so they can end up on top.  It looked like Bowden was going to run away with it, but JoePa has made up ground, and could catch him this year.

Does anyone else think this is a driving force behind the decision?

I agree with you. While I'm not advocating Joe stay or go, I do believe he is hurting the program by not naming a successor or having any kind of time line.

I feel like I've seen this kind of situation all too often with celebrity CEOs, sure maybe the company is great while the guy is there, but once he leaves it falls apart because he was so selfish not having a plan or setting up the firm for success not just while he is there but afterward. I feel this is what Joe is missing, he doesn't get this is about more than just him. I don't think PSU will fall off the map of college football once he leaves, but hes certainly hurting the program now.

While I realize that the argument is often made that he is simply hanging around so he can hold the all-time victories record...I don't buy it.  Joe is going to leave on his own terms and this has always been the case.  This is not the first time in Joe's career that there has been a large amount of people urging him to go.  If Bowden were to retire at the end of this season I really don't think that it would affect Joe's decision to try to extend his contract or not.  Chances are that Joe will tie or pass Coach Bowden by the end of this season.

I don't know how sold I am on the idea of a succession plan or not.  This is certainly becoming a more common notion in football but does it really help?  Has FSU seen improved recruiting last year since Bowden and FSU named Fisher the successor to the Seminoles thrown?  Have recruits actually avoided PSU because of Paterno?

I'm sure that Joe has a plan in place that will ensure that the University that he has devoted his career to will not fall apart when he leaves.  By why do we feel he has to share that plan with us?

Absolutely not. Joe cares as much about this record as Barry Sanders did about the all time rushing titles. And honestly, Joe is already more than thirty wins ahead of Bowden anyway. His wins at Samford are meaningless. The record just does not matter.

Is it really a record when the "coach" is no longer running the team? Bowden hasn't been calling plays or defining game strategy for years. He's a figurehead. JoPa has been more involved but as the story noted he doesn't visit recruits and clearly his assistants are having more influence than before.

I couldn't agree more SOS about Bowden and wanted to post that but I couldn't remember the name of that little school! I was thinking Marist for some reason.  But I agree that Bowden's number is misleading because Samford never played the caliber of football teams that Joe has been playing through out his career at PSU.
