Ok, the MVC is now 3-0 in the NIT. At least it's a good start. I know the NIT doesn't help much for increasing their legitimacy but it doesn't look good if you can't perform there. I don't get ISU having to play Dayton in the second round. The two teams with the highest RPI that didn't make the NCAA's play in the second round?!?! Are the NIT brackets determined by a committee like the NCAA's?

Sorry...despite their RPI of #34...they didn't beat any quality teams..three loses to Drake hurt big time..NIT is where they belong and hopefully they come to play tonight?..
But South Alabama and Mississippi St. had quality wins against who??? Or Arizona who had good wins, but finished 4-8 belong??? I think there can be arguments that several teams that made the tourney belong in the NIT - so why not ISU in the NCAA's too??? In comparison to the criteria for acceptance defined for some teams, I don't see any reason to say that ISU "is where they belong". They deserved better.
Nice win tonight by the way. Very classy to salute the fans at the end too.

Yeah, you would think the 2 teams with the highest RPI wouldn't meet until at least the final four. Dayton should have been at least a 2 seed in one of the other brackets.
It was still a solid win tonight, the Dayton game should be a good one.

Let me throw this out there because I admittedly don't know myself if it would be a good idea and it probably isn't realistic but what better place to ask the question....We could use a big man next year especially with losing Slack to graduation.....what about Brian Carlwell? His brother Ronnie was a Redbird a couple years back. Bad idea? Too much baggage? Nothing left?

I was at the ISU game last night, I would start a new thread but I am not of level yet.
Over 6,300 showed up for the game. The place was rockin with energy. The student section was going crazy. Also, someone had a sign that said "MID-MAJOR THIS ESPN AND CBS".....was a good time.
Next year, ISU will be a beast of a team. Why, here is the projected starting 5:
PG - Oguchi (the transfer from Oregon)
SG - The Big "O"
SF - Bobby Hill
PF - Sampay
PF - Odiakosa
As usual, we will have a suspect bench. Hopefully next year, Jank does not sub as much as he does this year. That is ISU's biggest problem, we sub to much. We do not have the depth to sub.

I think that performance tonight should end any discussion of Illinois State belonging in the NCCA tournament. That was awful. They set basketball back 40 years with that effort.

We couldn't make a basket or hit a freethrow if our life depended on it.
At least our program is on the rise, and good things should come. 25 wins for a first year coach......you gotta love that.

No, it didn't set basketball back 40 years; the Illini set basketball back 40 years with their season. I was at the game, and it was painful to watch those 10 excruciating minutes at the start of the 2nd half. But the effort was there all night, they came back, but they just ran out of gas.
The crowd was rockin' (it seemed more like 9,500 than the announced 8,800 - there weren't too many empty seats), and the program seems like it's headed in the right direction. I'm looking forward to next year.

Hold on there buddy. I am neutral when it comes to all Illinois schools, but won't sit there and let you talk crap about my school. My Illini went to the NCAA's 8 straight years, including to the Final 4 once. So what has Illinois St. done anytime recently?
Have you been as good as Southern Illinois? Nope. Have you been as good as Creighton? Nope. How about Wichita State? Northern Iowa?
I suggest you be happy that your Redbirds made progress and don't talk crap about a team that has dominated the state of Illinois for the last decade and has been a basketball power for the last decade with the exception of this year.

Take a chill pill. I was just reacting to someone who said my team set basketball back 40 years because of a bad stretch of 10 minutes. The Illini was the first thought that came to my mind because they truly had a rotten year. My bad. Thanks for pulling for ISU. I'd like to see ISU play the Illini more in the near future (maybe they could even visit Redbird Arena on occasion). It would generate some much-needed excitement about college basketball in Illinois.
Cheers!

I was at the game and those 10 minutes were bad. 28-28 at halftime, then ISU scoring the first 4 to make it 32-28. Then when O missed that wide open 3, which he was off all night, and ISU got the rebound, miss, O rebound, miss, O rebound, miss, O rebound, miss, O rebound - yes, that many possessions in one offensive set, the team just got really cold at that point. I love that Dayton brought their band. I must say, the ISU pep band needs to find some new tunes to play.
Still a great season. And next year will be better.
ILL55INI: Last year's NCAA berth was a gift. Has Bruce Webber proven that he can recruit at the national level? Programs rise and fall, some just rise and fall and sit there for a while - ISU! BTW, the other poster quantified his statement by "this season". I hate the "tradition" talk. It is overused and has no bearing on the game being played today. We just saw MSU get spanked and Whisky get tooled. With the changes to scholarships, you can no longer load your bench 10 deep with 5 star recruits.
