Only Steve Alford could take the loaded New Mexico Lobos and turn them into an NIT team.  They lost last night to Utah in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West conference to finish with a 24-8 record.

The team did get screwed when their player JR Giddens didn't win the conference MVP, but as all of us Hawkeye fans know, only Stevie could turn such promise into such crap.

I think UNM might still have a very very slim shot at an at large, but likely not if they can't win their tourney or at least get to the finals.  Still UNLV was a sweet 16 team out there last year so who knows.

As a lot of us have though, better a 13-19 season under Coach L than a 24-8 season under Alford where even if he gets in, will lose to a team like SW Louisiana or whoever it was we lost to in the first round with Horton and co.

Kind of makes me laugh at the thread on our site a while back where the UNM guy wanted to give us so much crap for letting Alford go, but I am too above going to their site and gloating.
