 Just read that Freshmen  guard Jay Dee Luster has been given his release from the NMSU basketball team. Did he really have a chance to start next year with Terrance Joyner ( Former Arkansas commit ) deciding to come to NMSU as a point guard next season? Does anybody think this is a big loss for the program? I believe JayDee was a good player but too small and never was totally committed to NMSU after Theus left to coach the Sacramento Kings in the NBA. Lets hope some of the super recruits we have for next season stay healthy, in class, and out of trouble before the start of next season. <table cellspacing="1" cellpadding="3" width="100%" class="tablesm"> <tbody> <tr valign="top"> <td> 2008 </td> <td align="right"> Data provided by Scouts, Inc. </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <table cellspacing="1" cellpadding="3" class="tablehead"> <tbody> <tr> <td class="stathead" style="BACKGROUND: #730000" colspan="9"> 2007 Player Commitments - New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="colhead"> <td width="23%"> NAME</td> <td width="5%"> POS</td> <td width="5%"> HT</td> <td width="5%"> WT</td> <td width="20%"> HOMETOWN</td> <td width="7%"> RANK</td> <td align="right" width="5%"> GRADE</td> <td width="10%"> STATUS</td> <td width="20%"> NCAA SCHOOL</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow"> <td> Herb Pope</td> <td> PF</td> <td> 6-9</td> <td> 215</td> <td> Aliquippa, PA</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> PF #8</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 91</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="evenrow"> <td> Wendell McKines</td> <td> SF</td> <td> 6-5</td> <td> 223</td> <td> Richmond, CA</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> SF #22</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 85</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow"> <td> Hamidu Rahman</td> <td> C</td> <td> 6-9</td> <td> 265</td> <td> Somerset, NJ</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> C #37</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 80</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="evenrow"> <td> Jawaan Alston</td> <td> PF</td> <td> 6-8</td> <td> 190</td> <td> Uniontown, PA</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> PF #55</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 79</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow"> <td> Jahmar Young</td> <td> SG</td> <td> 6-4</td> <td> 165</td> <td> Baltimore, MD</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> POST</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 78</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="evenrow"> <td> Troy Gillenwater</td> <td> PF</td> <td> 6-7</td> <td> 235</td> <td> Fitchburg, MA</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> PF #86</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 76</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow"> <td> Deangelo Jones</td> <td> SG</td> <td> 6-4</td> <td> 180</td> <td> Seattle, WA</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> SG #78</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 76</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="evenrow"> <td> JayDee Luster</td> <td> PG</td> <td> 5-8</td> <td> 148</td> <td> San Diego, CA</td> <td nowrap="nowrap"> PG #122</td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 73</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow"> <td> Gordo Castillo</td> <td> SG</td> <td> 6-4</td> <td>  </td> <td> Las Cruces, NM</td> <td>  </td> <td class="sortcell" align="right"> 40</td> <td> Signed</td> <td> New Mexico State</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Here are the young super players we have returning next season along with 3 star 6'10 freshmen center Chris Gabriel, 3 star 6'4 freshmen point guard Terrence Joyner and Faisal Aden a 6'5 small forward who is  currently in prep school. Just wanted to share the future of the program with everyone who is not up to date on the recruiting.

Here is a list of young Freshmen NMSU has coming in next season: Hamidu Rahman 6'10 Center who was recruited by  Pitt,Syracuse,Louisville,Uconn,St.Johns and Illinois.Troy Gillenwater 6'8 Forward who originally committed to Oklahoma State and had offers from Memphis,Cincinnati and Texas.Terrence Joyner 6'3 Point Guard who Originally committed to Arkansas and had offers from USC and Tennessee.Chris Gabriel 6'10 Center who ESPNU has listed as the most improved big man in the class of 2008. Along with super Sophs Herb Pope, Wendell Mckines, Jahmar Young, Dengelo Jones and Gordo Castillo. And Junior Johnathan Gibson who has all conference written all over him. A talented group indeed should be a very good season for NMSU in 2008!

It would be great to keep getting info like this. I heard early on the Herb Pope remains committed to the program. It was just after Reggie Theus left.  Gibson is a real three-point threat, but i didn't see him comfortable at the point filling in for Fred Peete. His loss, by the way, is the one to overcome. Big men can learn their fit into the team fairly quickly.

Thanks for the update!

My sources are just digging for info at many b-ball recruiting sites. ESPNU.com click schools and go from there. SCOUT.com, RIVALS.com and HOOPSCOOP.com I will update as soon as I get more info. Many of these highly touted players are high major prospects that came to NMSU because NMSU has something no other school can offer. They had trouble keeping grades up so they could become eligable to enroll and play. This is where NMSU has done something remarkable by using the Dona Ana Branch C.C.  as a source to enroll these kids ( The aforementioned players are paying their own way at the D.A.B.C.C. )  and keep them eligable so they can enter NMSU this year and still have 4 years left  of eligability to play. They all enrolled at the D.A.B.C.C. in December of '07 and the word is they are all doing well and will be enrolled by summer session 2 at NMSU. I would compare it to sending these kids to J.C.  so they can get their grades up but instead of having 2 years of eligability they have 4! Very smart and I am sure NMSU is starting a trend that many schools will soon follow. No word yet other than JayDee Luster transferring out.

Big truck Johnathan Gibson was not comfortable at the point because he is not a true point guard. He can fill in but  he is  a true 2 guard. This is where Terrance Joyner a true point guard will do a good job of filiing the shoes of the departing Fred Peete. He has great size 6'3 and and atheletic ability. What was Arkansas loss is NMSU's gain!

Awesome news. It's really good to hear that NMSU is getting good recruits coming in. This should help out the WAC. Nevada vs NMSU is going to be a treat to watch next year.
