If UCLA plays like it did against Texas A & M, WKU will win this game. To facts here. 1 is that WKU has no problem getting big leads through 30 minutes of basketball. 2. UCLA has no trouble falling behind by double digits through 30 minutes of basketball. UCLA is a great comeback team and WKU has trouble closing out games. But is UCLA digs themself to big of a hole, WKU will win this game as UCLA will be unable to mount to comeback needed to erase what could be a 20 point deficit. It should be a good game but im sticking with WKU in this one. Western Moves on and Beats UCLA 73-71.
wow ragina you dont know english its two not to and UCLA will not play like they did against Texas A & M nand the reason why Teexas A&m had a chance to win was they are physical and have size you will be lucky if Love doesnt score 30 you dont have size how 6-7+ guys you have Texas A&m has 4 starting and 2 off the bench that play a good amount WKU will not play this close for more than 30 minutes
I'm surprised no other WK fans have come in and posted how they think they'll pull off the upset over UCLA. Then again maybe you're more realistic then most fans and realize the run is over. Either way It was a great year for you guys. Good luck.
Hubert Davis picked WKY on espn last night too. You'd think he would have learned his lesson when he picked Arizona to upset UCLA before the Saturday night espn game earlier this year. I guess he has forgotten that UCLA was leading that game by almost 40 late when they called off the dogs and coasted to the W.
This is a terrible matchup for West. Ky no matter how you slice it, and I think the most likely outcome is a UCLA romp.
Here is why the Hilltoppers have almost no chance:
1. They go as their guards go. Almost all of their offense comes from the guards. Now Courtney Lee is an immense talent, and I'm sure he is going to score, but if there is any team in the country built to neutralize great guard play, it is UCLA. Collison and Westbrook are both first team all Pac-10 defenders with Westbrook being Pac-10 player of the year on defense. Lee is going to have to work like he hasn't worked all year for his points. For all Shipps' struggles on offense in the past 2 months, he is a tall, long, and athletic defended that brings the defense every night. A similar matchup took place in the Arizona at UCLA Saturday night game earlier this year Nic Wise and Jerred Bayless are also highly-talented guards and they got taken apart by Collison's ball pressure and Westbrook's clamps on Bayless.
2. The first game of the weekend is not where you're going to catch UCLA unprepared. Coach Howland game-plans like nobody else in the business, and given an entire week to prepare for a team, their scheme will be lights-out and learned by the team backwards-and-forwards. With limited time to prepare, West Va. on Saturday scares me a whole lot more than West. Ky.
3. West Ky. likes to run and speed up tempo. I think getting Shipp and Westbrook into transition in the open court is exactly how to get them going on offense again. I expect them both to shoot a lot of layups and very few jumpers Thursday and that is not going to be good for the Hilltoppers.
Obviously UCLA is a bit vulnerable and has had multiple close calls in the past month. But the type of team that gives them trouble is someone with a significant inside presense. Both Stanford and Texas A&M play big inside which creates problems on both defense (I think A&M had scored 30 of its 38 points in the paint when they went up 38-28 early in the second half) and offense (A&M and Stanford both shut down Love which forces UCLA's average shooters to have to shoot 15-20 foot jump shots). I just can't see any way that a guard-dominated offense gives UCLA any trouble at all. I'm going with UCLA 78 WKY 54.
1. For all those who may read this...We, in Bowling Green, prefer to refer to the the university as WKU instead of WKY. I realize WKY is what is on the CBS scoreboard, but we prefer WKU. Nonetheless, we will still understand who you are talking about if you decide to call us WKY.
2. It is not that we, WKU, feel that we have no chance on Thursday. It's that there is no reason to talk about it on a message board. I think the play on the court will speak for itself on Thursday night. I have the utmost confidence in my boys. I have no doubt we will pull the upset (an upset if you live outside of Bowling Green, KY). This team is playing with more confidence than any other TOPS team I have seen. Granted, I was around in 1971.
I must have blacked out. I thought you said WKU would score 73 points against UCLA. Have you been paying attention for the last 3 years. The Bruins are the best defensive team in College basketball. There is a better chance of WKU winning the national title than of the Big Red breaking the 73 point mark.
I like WKU, I do. They have a nice little mid-major team. They have beaten nothing but Mid-majors to get here and that is a major problem in my mind. They will not win this game. But even if you want to go out on a limb and pick them, make the score something like 55-53. No way this game is played in the 70's.
