And that line right there is my main problem with baseball. If anyone who wasn't a fan of either NY or Bos you already know that it would appear to be that MLB basically treats it as the only 2 teams in baseball that matter and everyone else is just here to get dumped on. If baseball doesn't have major changes to its overall system then we're doomed I tell you.....

DOOMED!!!!!!!!

Thats not really true. The Tigers arent a big market team....we dont have the big TV money that LA and NY get.  But Illitch spends the money...the people fill the stadium...Dont cry because the Twins refuse to spend money.

for all you bottom feeders. why not take a page out of the Yankees and redsox books. with revenue sharing, every team in the major leagues have a few extra million to spend. take say 1 million and give it to the highly rated prospect like the yanks and sox do. but no. instead they pass over the Boras clients and pick up some scrub. the owners line their pockets with the revenue money and your teams suck.

The Yanks, Sox, Angels, Tigers are all doing it the right way. spend on key free agents and throw some bonus money to the top prospect. Joba was a 2nd rd pick due to teams not wanting to pay a signing bonus.

I wouldn't say all but two teams are doomed.  I would say that there is no middle class in baseball.  I would put the Tigers, Mets, and Angels with the Red Sox and Yankees.  Knocking on the door iare Arizona and Toronto.

First of all, I'm not sure where the argument of "MLB treats these teams like they are the only two that matter" comes from. Do they get 91 home games instead of 81? Are they allowed to skip the regular season and go right to the playoffs? For years, people complained that the Yankees (and to a lesser extent, the Red Sox) simply used their high payroll to sign players. Now, despite the fact that BOTH franchises have made concentrated efforts to build up their system, it's STILL not good enough for people who want to whine about some competitive imbalance. I mean heck, the Yankees have Cano, Posasa, Jeter, Wang, Cabrera, Hughes, Kennedy, Rivera and Chamberlain who are all going to play key roles, and the Red Sox have an equally impressive crop of home-grown players, like ellsbury, buchholz, pedrioa, lester and the like, but somehow, the teams are still the "only ones that matter". Well, if they can;t get their players from free agency or trades and now their farm system how are they supposed to build a team? Tell me, what would please the masses?  Should we let all the other 28 teams have first choice at all the players?

I know of course, that the standard argument is that "We need a salary cap." Why exactly? Because the Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2000? Since that time, there have been TWO expansion teams who have won them, both at the Yankees expense. So don't tell me that these teams can't compete. And of course, the players' union would never allow a salary cap. But I forgot, the reason for that is because the union is TOTALLY comprised of Yankees and Red Sox players which is why we can;t pass a cap.

The biggest misconception in sports is that a Salary Cap can eliminate dynasties like the Yanks and Sox.

The NBA had their modern cap start in 1983-1984. Never mind that the Bulls won 6 titles in 8 years in the nineties, or that the Lakers and Spurs have won 7 of the last 9 between them.  Why didn't the cap stop those teams? The Knicks spend more money than anyone, but they haven't won a title since the 70's. Why?

The NFL began theirs in 1994. The Patriots won three Super Bowls in four years not too long ago. Why didn't the salary cap stop them? The Redskins are famous for throwing money at free agents, and yet, they haven't won since 1991. Why?

Because it's not all about money. It's about being smart, drafting well, trading well, signing players to smart contracts.

The "doomsday" scenario you talk about is laughable. This is a game that survived

1. A team throwing a World Series

2. Segregation

3. A strike cancelling a World Series

4. Steroids

Baseball's not going to be "doomed"

I'd even throw the Diamondbacks in there with the rest, their pitching staff is going to be pure nastiness and it is the same team that got themselves to the #1 spot in the NL as last year. Granted they are a bit offensively challenged, but with a rotation like that (Brandon Webb and Dan Haren...are you kidding me?) leading the way, they're going to be one of the top flight teams in the NL.

Have we all forgotten the past so quickly?  The Yankees, (Brooklyn) Dodgers, and (New York) Giants dominated the sport throughout what are commonly referred to as the 'Golden Years' of the sport (20's-50's), with the occasional strong season by (for example) smaller market teams like the Cardinals or Tigers.   And yet baseball endured as the most popular sport in the USA until free agency and player strikes gradually ate away at the fan base.

The Yankees have ALWAYS been able to exert their large market dominance on the rest of the league, ever since they acquired Babe Ruth in 1920.  That was 90 years ago.  And before free agency, they did it simply by hiring the best scouts and signing the best young players.

So the Yankees (and now the Red Sox ) are paying big bucks to the players, and signing the best prospects...I really don't see what's so novel about anything written here.

More like ESPN...Eastern Sports Network....treats it like their are only two teams. MLB would love it if all the teams were as popular because that means more revenue which in the end is that matters sans the fans. The popularity and national story lines center around the Yanks-Sox because it sells papers and generates internet hits....just like this useless story. Its a made up rivalry that the real fans prior to the late 1990's cared little about unless it was the AL Championship. And how do baseball teams "monopolize" young talent anyway? When you win you draft later in the first round. Secondly there are two sides to every trade. Nobody was complaining when small market teams were robbing the Yanks of their farm system for overpriced hired guns. Now all of a sudden Theo and Cashman are making intelligent baseball decisions with their farm players and its called monopolizing talent? Give me a break. Last time I checked LA, San Francisco, Texas, Florida, both Chicago's, and Philadelphia had plenty of money to spend and did so. Its not how much money you can spend but what you do with it. Yes the Sox and Yankees thanks to their success and markets have an advantage dollar wise. But they have earned that through years of success and crafty business decisions....not to mention pumping more money than any other teams into the Tax revenue sharing  progam.....another Bud Selig farce of a program that admittedly benefited his own team....which he sold after securing a new stadium at taxpayers expense! That the real rub in baseball. Its a business wether fans like it or not. It will serve you well to remember that when your owner takes in the free money and forgoes on signing that coveted free agent. The Mets finally wised up and are now are a very successfull franchise again....albeit at a cost. But thats whatt it takes. That and a GM like Cashman, Theo, or Minyana.
