The coach needs to provide a winning atmosphere...and I'm sorry, but I'm 35, and in those circumstances...I would be less than interested in hustling my tail off with nothing at stake.
Shaq came to Miami knowing full well he wouldn't have to carry that team. Then all of the sudden he has to carry the team...and the coach ends up giving up...
How many other coaches do you see scouting the NCAA tourney during games? I don't care what his role is with the team, you don't see Isiah Thomas doing that.
This was easily one of Pat Riley's worst coaching jobs, and Shaq knew it. He just took the wrong approach to it, I think.
