hey paydirt, I'll help you out a bit, although I am so bad with names and locales...
La Esquina - Little Italy, Kenmare btwn Lafayette and Centre. Best taco place in NYC. Hit the stand, not the restaurant... And get the grilled corn!
Maxx - East Village, Avenue B btwn 3rd and 4th. Great little "Italian" place. I quote Italian because the menu isn't extensive and it is mainly app's and pasta, but the lasagna and gnocchi are both great and the mozzarella is so fresh it melts. Reasonably priced to boot.
The Shake Shack - Madison Sq. Park, 23rd St. btwn 5th and Madison. The ultimate summer burger spot in Manhattan. Good burgers, good shakes, good fries and a nice seat in the park... if you show up early enough to get a seat. Stand (12th btwn University and 5th) and BLT Burger (6th btwn 11th and 12th) are pricier and slightly more upscale indoor burger places that I also like.
Perilla - West Village, Jones btwn Bleeker and W 4th. Sort of an American Bistro, with Hanger Steak, Skate and an assortment of sides like rissotto. The head chef is Harold Dieterle, winner of Top Chef's first season. His appeal probably trumps the food, but I have eaten there twice and liked both meals and the dining experience in general. It is expensive, but I have been taken by a PwC partner both times, so may I recommend trying to get the boss to take you.
I live in Greenpoint, so I know a number of great Williamsburg and Greenpoint haunts if you'd like to trek to Brooklyn and deal with the hippsters...
