I don't know the guy personally (most of us don't)...and I certainly would never condone steroid use (it's unhealthy and it wrecked the game forever)...and Jose Canseco (b/c he admitted to it) was a big time user and a big time supplier (or at least a middle man).
With that said, I seriously doubt that Canseco is BROKE. Sure, he's cashing in on a hot topic...and he has exposed a number of player's lies. However, I think that a lot of his motivation (yes, money is part of it)...is the fact that he feels (and probably rightfully so) that he was BLACKBALLED from the game...that is, if you don't count his time with the San Diego Surf Dogs and the Golden Baseball League. He still wanted to play and felt that he could...and all the guys that he "juiced" with were playing and getting big contracts while he was forced out of the league. He was frustrated that very few of his old cohorts spoke up for him when he helped (through steroid advice and suppliers) get them the big contracts and endorsements. This is his revenge. Baseball turned it's back on him...so he responded with his books.
If anything, Canseco's books have allowed a more meaningful discussion on steroids, something that Bud Selig and the Player's Union tried to hide and sweep under the rug for a long time as the league made big bucks on the backs of guys using lots of steroids.
I say, let Canseco open his mouth all that he wants...he may not be the most credible source out there, but he has indirectly opened investigations that have proven that many guys have been lying about their usage.
