Don't get me wrong.  I'm a huge Phillies fan but Pat Burrell an MVP candidate?? That might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.  He hit .215 with 11 hrs before the all-star break last year for God sakes and his fielding leaves something to be desired to say the least. I certainly hope Scott Miller is right and I have to eat these words but Miller is putting a little too much faith in players in contract years. What do you think?

For the Indians Travis Hafner last year was in his contract year and his numbers were way down.  If a player has any pride at all, he will always do his best.

Both Pat Burrell and Travis Hafner will probably had off years and will return closer to their career numbers in '08.  MVP for Pat?  Not likely, but who knows.  Just something for Scott to talk about in the off season.

I notice Pat Burrell is making $13.25M this year, so I'm sure the Phillies hope he plays up to being the highest paid player on the team.

as a Phillies guy i couldnt agree more. even if by a miracle he had an mvp type season, that would mean he would still have to come in at least third on his own team. a contract year isnt going to make an alright outfielder into bonds.

Im not so sure that Pat burrel is an MVP contender but he will get some votes if he plays like he did in the 2nd half last year all year long but the Phillies have 3 better MVP candidates (Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Ryan Howard)

P.S. are they the only team in any major sport that has 3 legitimate MVP candidates? The Boston Celtics "Big 3" get all of the love but only have 1 legitimate MVP contender in Garnett.

Yeah calling Burrell an MVP candidate is almost as rediculous as him picking the Mets 3rd, and then choosing David Wright as the NL MVP.  Did he proofread before posting this article?

If Pat moved up to bat 3rd and gets his mechanics to be the way they were the 2nd half of the season last year i could see a chance. But guess what?  Utley has the 3rd spot and will be the NL MVP.  He had the MVP wrapped up last year until he got hit by that rookie pitcher.  Pat Burrell is a good team player he isnt a MVP candidate.
