You are pathetic.......you can watch Memphis totally outmatch a Tom Izzzo-coached team and still give back-handed complimentd....quit acting like your Dean Smith....you were f--king impresssed aand you know it.  Believe it or not, Memphis'job is not to impress you....so quit acting like it is....oh , and by the way, we made 74% of our free throws, unlike MSU's 65%....not bad for an "AND 1" team that doesn't play like a team......you are a joke!  Next victim: Tejas........go ahead...pick 'em by 15.....talk about how we won't make free throws or something else....I am gonna ride your poor judgement all the way to the title, Mike!

Lest we forget... here's what your brilliant, insightful journalism produced last week.  In my world if a professional is this inconsistent and off the mark he is out of a job. Oh wait a minute, my mistake was thinking you're a professional. My BAD!!!

It has to be tough showing up for work when your peers are laughing behind your back..huh Mikey??

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Following what was a pedantic and predictable non-tremor inducing regional, I leave you with this thought: Memphis is the most flawed No. 1 seed in the tournament. They might be the most flawed top seed in many years.

That thud you just heard was Memphis demonstrating the fine art of stonemasonry while shooting its free throws.

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="200" align="left"> <tbody> <tr> <td width="200"> That's right, Coach C. You should be worried about your team's flaws after this game. (US Presswire) </td> <td width="15">  </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="200"> That's right, Coach C. You should be worried about your team's flaws after this game. (US Presswire) </td> <td width="15">  </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Memphis, the construction guild called, they want their concrete back.

The bottom line from Memphis' near death experience is the Bulldogs demonstrated what I have been saying about Memphis since the NCAA tournament began -- Memphis is ripe to be had.

They may yet win everything because of sheer firepower. In some cases, they're the U.S. Army and opponents are Grenada. They have enough game, guns and elevation to inflict damage to both backboards and frontcourts.

But Memphis is nothing more than streetballers. They're AND 1. They're rock stars, the Britney Spears of college basketball. The Tigers will sell out arenas and sell a lot of records but it remains to be seen if they can win a Grammy.

There is no display of team ball like UCLA or North Carolina or even Texas. They couldn't care less about making free throws.

All John Calipari does is roll the basketball onto the floor and his players shoot 3s and dunk and brick their free throws.

Yet make them adjust and run an actual offense and they can't do it.

The Tigers have accumulated a gaudy record because of the sheer force of the athleticism of their players. Calipari has assembled a group of superhuman trapeze artists.

But not a true basketball team.

This could not be more evident than their 77-74 victory over Mississippi State which propelled the Tigers into the Sweet 16. The Bulldogs played smart, controlled the basketball early, frustrating Memphis into turnovers and bad shots. With eight minutes left in the first half Mississippi State led 18-12.

The Bulldogs utilized a suffocating defense forcing Memphis further and further away from the basket, making them shoot long, bad shots. The Bulldogs also prevented Memphis from getting fast breaks and dunks. With about three minutes left in the first half, it was still close with the Tigers grabbing a two-point lead.

Memphis went on its predictable runs and enjoyed its prerequisite dunks. Still, as in Memphis' game against hapless UT-Arlington on Friday night, the Tigers had difficulty dealing a lethal blow to Mississippi State. Memphis had just a 10 point lead with around 14 minutes to play, an eight-point lead a short time later and a five-point lead soon after that.

The game was 48-45 with 11 minutes left and 50-49 two minutes later. It was tied at 52 with seven minutes remaining. By then, Memphis had missed 9 of 14 free throws while the Bulldogs connected on 12 of 17. In all, Memphis shot 46.9 percent from the line and an embarrassing 45.5 percent in the second half when making them became vital.

But free throws don't mean anything.

Right?

Mississippi State was woefully outmatched from a talent standpoint and had no right standing toe to toe with Memphis but there they were hanging tough thanks to playing team ball and running a legitimate offense.

Eventually the talent gap took its toll. Mississippi State players were breathing heavily at the end of the game and making judgment mistakes they hadn't earlier. They were clearly tired.

They were done.

Memphis is just getting started.

It will be interesting to watch them play some of the greatly coached teams left in the tournament. Other teams are going to do exactly what Mississippi State did: play Hack-a-Shaq and see if Memphis can make their free throws.

Except those teams will be closer in talent to Memphis. Much closer.

And those teams won't shoot 45 percent from the free throw line.

It was fitting late in the game when a thick curtain blocking sunlight from entering a doorway in Alltel Arena was accidentally pulled back and a bright ray of light shined into the face of Memphis players as they attempted free throws. Excuse me, as they missed free throws.

The literal spotlight will be on the Tigers and the free throw stripe for the remainder of the tournament.

Team ball versus AND 1.

Which style will win a championship?

This idiot "journalist" must be bi-polar... tears you up one day, down the next. I can't believe he actually gets a paycheck from CBS Corp. Not that he's bi-polar, but that he doesn't know jack about basketball, team building, and ethics.

Giddyup...totally agree.  Freeman has been trashing the Tigers all season.  Needs to get a life and should totally apologize to all the Tigers and Coach Calipari.

It will be interesting to watch the game on Sunday.  In my mind a #1 seed justifies its seeding if it reaches the Elite Eight.  If Memphis does not manage a win, get ready for the "I told you so" article.  But there would be no shame in losing to a #2 Texas team that is playing about an hour from their campus.

If there is a team that is not in one of the "Big Six" power conferences, writers will always state, "Well this team still has something to prove" theory.  I think last night showed everyone that this team has the goods to win it all.    If that happens get ready for an NCAA investigation.

Mike,

You had to throw that bit in there about Memphis' offense not being orchestrated like Duke or Carolina's. That is called trying to save face. Someone only tries to save face when they have been shown to be amazingly wrong about something. You were amazingly wrong about Memphis. They played amazing last night. Instead of throwing in that small barb about their offense, why don't you just man up and give them their full due? It is sad that you can't give them the full respect that they have earned.

TigerBlue08:  I totally concur.   Obviously Freeman doesn't have any respect for the Memphis Tigers or Coach Calapari.    This story is tame compared to many of his other articles about Memphis.   Freeman must have some type of complex or even racial prejudice about Memphis.   While many sportswriters have voiced their critique about Memphis; whether it by FT% shooting, our conference, or whatever ... Freeman often takes it to the extreme.

Freeman doesn't need to say he's sorry, or he didn't truly understand the calibre of the Memphis team ... nor does he need to give any of the Memphis fans and the Team false accolades ... especially if his doing so is against his "expert opinion".

Yet, what is amazing, is Freeman apparently has no respect for collegiate basketball.    Meaning, if he truly had respect for a team that totally dominated a Sweet 16 Game --- whether it be FG%, Rebounds, and especially the awesome Memphis DEFENSE ... if he were truly an unbiased sportswriter ... he would have done so without all the back-handed compliments ... off-handed comments ... and "but's" regarding the Memphis Tigers performance ... and their prospects at winning the NC.

The Memphis Tigers' performance last night was undoubtedly one of the finest showcases of collegiate basketball skills as a TEAM in the NCAA Tournament.  The pace was actually slow, compared to our average tempo of 70 possessions ... so speed was not a factor ... other than it was far faster than Michigan State could handle, as their average pace has been 61 possessions.

What counts in basketball is Efficiency of Performance.   Memphis showed last night what Efficiceny truly means both Offensively and Defensively ... as they have all season long.   We won the game in every single category.  The biggest reason was  Defense ... rebounds/steals/blocks and keeping MSU out of the lane.  Our Offense was equally awesome ... as we not only shot well ... and our Offensive Rebounds provided us the important 2nd shots that MSU just didn't have.   Since the definition for Efficiency is Offense less Defense ... the Memphis Tigers posted another Win with a Point Spread of 18 points!

Was the 18 point Win expected or a fluke???    The answer ... It was a fluke !!!!   Memphis should have won by only 13 points!! ... which is the average spread against the other Ten (10) other NCAA Tournament Teams that Memphis has played this season.

Then Why did Memphis Win by 18 points?? .. much less the 30 point spread we had at halftime spread!   There are two answers:

(1) Our FT% shooting went off the charts to 74%!  versus our average of 60%!   This provided an additional 4.2 points we normally do not have ... and (2) our Free Throw Rate (Attempts) also went off the chart from 42% to 50% as MSU sent Memphis to the foul line 5 times more than normal ... perhaps believing Freeman knows what he is talking about when he states "Memphis will be the first #1 seed out of the tournament because of poor FT% shooting"!!      This "backfired" on MSU and gave Memphis a net gain of an extra 0.7 points!  ... where Net = (74%-60%) times 5 extra Free Throw Attempts.

So collectively Memphis gained "HUGE" extra& nbsp;5 points ... due to our outstanding performance at the foul line.   As a Memphis Tiger Fan ... I was impressed with our team's FT%.   Were they trying to prove to the nation that they can hit FT's!!   ... at least for one game ... or did Coach Cal send in a magician to help them "visualize" making free throws, as he tried to do lst year?

Well,  I label the FT% shooting as a statistical fluke!  ... and as such the Memphis Tigers should have only won by 13 points last night!  ... which is exactly their statistical margin of victory over all other TOP 50 Ranked Teams for the season!   So while in the 1st half ... Memphis just played almost flawless with their 30 point halftime margin ... they did back off (or MSU tried their best) and MSU won the 2nd half by 12 points.    That really concerns me ... as I expected at least a 40 point margin for the game!

So I guess Freeman is Right!!   If the Memphis Tigers ever face a team that is able to play close to PAR with the Memphis Tigers  ... and can somehow trim the margin for that game to 5 points or less ... then FT% can make a difference! ... should that ever happen.

The odds of that happening is a small 11% as only 4 games (out of 36) had a margin that close (USC, UAB, TENN, and Miss State).   Yet, in all those games (but one) ... Memphis dominated the boards and our Offensive Rebounds and Defensive performance won the game.   The only exception (which I hate!) is the Tenn game ... which we lost ... not because of FT% ... but only because of Offensive Rebounds ... which also stands as a statistical fluke! as it took away our chance for a perfect season.      Well, the Memphis Tigers weren't necessarily seeking a perfect season ... but our team did learn a lot from that effort ... especially on what can happen ... if they do not play at their best and at the level of their talent and capabilities.

Now, Freeman and other negative sportswriters are saying Memphis will fold in the Elite 8 ... as if our losing the last two years ... is some kind of prediction we will do so again.   As all Memphis Fans know ... those were different teams and players ... and has nothing at all to do with the Memphis Tigers in 2008!

Now the Count is Three (3) Wins and Three (3) more for the NC!   Yet, as all year, it is one game at a time!   Texas is next ... and while they may have a home court advantage ... the margin of victory for the Memphis Tigers should be our historical 12-13 points on Sunday!  A more likely outcome will be 7-9 points ... as Texas's Offensive arsenal is comparable (slightly stronger) to Memphis ...  yet, as in all other games, including last night, it is our Defensive performance (now ranked #2) that will crush Texas on Sunday ... or at least crush them enough to WIN the game and march on the the Final Four!

Now, back to Mr. Freeman.  As a Memphis Fan, I really don't care what he thinks or does or writes.   Perhaps his employer may?  or perhaps other collegiate basketball fans may?  ... as whether it be Memphis or one of the other Elite 8 ... we all want to know ... is any team for real ... especially as they continue to Win and advance in the NC Tournament.

If Memphis does happen to lose (as any team can lose on a given day ... we did once!) ... then Freeman can then say ... I told you so!

Yet, as Memphis Wins on Sunday ... which they should ... and as a Memphis Wins the next three games and the National Chanmpionship ... which all Memphis Fans are cheering our team to do ... as they have had a truly sensational season ... and those sensational efforts may (should) continue to produce the well deserved and earned rights to be the NC for 2008!   So if or when that happens ... I wonder if Mr. Freeman will ever have the guts to become a unbiased sportwriter and write a decent article on the Memphis Tigers?   If he does fine ... yet as a Memphis Fan ... I really don't care about Freeman.

The only one's I do care about are the 13 fine young men and players on the great Memphis Tiger's Team and one of the finest coaches and coaching staff in America.  All of you guys are just great and you are doing an OUTSTANDING EFFORT!   We are all PROUD and HAPPY for YOU.   Keep up the Great Job you are doing ... and taking one game at a time ... You now have only Three (3) more Wins to GO!   Just play your Best ... and if you do ... the Best will happen!

GO TIGERS GO!

Right on.  Mike is a punk, evidently.  Not one word about defense, just some disparaging remarks about how the Tigers' offense isn't Carolina's or Duke's.  Please God, put Carolina in our path.  Hell, bring Duke out there too.

Freeman (and I certainly hope you actually read this), you said "make them adjust and run an actual offense and they can't do it." MSU played zone most of the night (particularly in the first half), and Memphis did nothing but tear it apart.  You said "[i]t will be interesting to watch them play some of the greatly coached teams."    If the Tigers are incapable of executing an offense, why couldn't one of the "greatly coached teams" find a way to even slow them down in the first half?  The fact is, the Tigers did play an organized zone offense.

But enough about offense, how about credit for the defense and rebounding???  Whether you agree with Cal's offensive approach or not, this is one of the best coached teams from an defensive standpoint in the country.
