All you Brown-Eye fans out there saying that the "Mistake by the Lake" is the team to beat this year are forgetting 1 thing:
Derek Anderson is not the Franchise QB you think he is.
The guy had a decent season with 29 TD/19 INT/86.0 QB Rating
(PS Bernie Kosar-esque numbers doesn't make an elite QB)
But lets look at the 1st half of the season to the second half:
1st 8 games:
17 TD/ 9 INT/ 96.6 QB Rating
2nd 8 games:
12 TD/ 10 INT/ 74.3 QB Rating
Do you think the league may have figured out Anderson and the Browns Offense a little better in the second half of the season? If he could have even matched his 1st half production the Browns would have made the playoffs, but he didn't he got progressively worse as the season went on. His numbers fell off when it mattered most. As he gained NFL Experience as a starting QB he actually got worse not better.
But don't worry, when he starts off 1-5 you guys can just put Brady "The Savior" Quinn in and watch your season go down the tube.

Derek Anderson is definitely not the answer to being Clevelands Quarterback, He cannot throw a short pass if his life depended on it....how many times was Jamal Lewis wide OPen about 7 - 8 yards down the field and Anderson felt he HAD to throw into 2 - 3 man covers downfield...He is NOT a SMART quarterback....you need to utilize short passes in the game....This is why he will only ba a make you or break you quarterback.

watching the Brady Quinn drive at the end of last year, i now believe hes the real deal. (I didn;t think so during the draft.) However his recievers definitly have to get used to how hard he slings that thing. i saw more then 1 pass bounce off recievers chests because he has a bit of a rocket.

There are plenty of Browns fans who do not think Anderson is the answer. However, I think they HAD to keep him. He threw the most TD passes in Cleveland of any QB since Brian Sipe. At times, Anderson was brilliant. At times, he wasn't. You keep him and try to see if you can mitigate the times he wasn't brilliant. You can't let a guy go like that especially when you haven't had a productive QB in about 15 years. Anderson was kept to make sure we are not releasing a very good/great QB. If he doesn't pan out, BQ will be waiting. If he does pan out, even better for the Browns.

You're basing your "Quinn is the Real Deal" theory on one drive?
I guess by your theory Atlanta's future QB should be Chris Redmond then. He did better than one drive, he played one whole game (and played really well).
One drive is not quite enough proof to show that this kid will ever be all that he has been hyped up to be. Until he starts 8 or so games you or I can't even try to say that he's for real. When (IF) he becomes a starter in this league, teams will get game film on him and things will be much more difficult than coming in as a backup. Do you really think the Defense practiced an "Incase Brady Quinn Comes In" package?
Have you ever noticed how most Backups come in and do relatively well, but then when they start the next week they get destroyed? Because there is NO Defensive preparation for the backup, but when the backup becomes the starter things change.
Don't get your panites all in a bunch. I'm not saying Brady Quinn is a bust, I'm just saying that you can't call him the real deal after seeing him come in as a backup and putting together 1 drive.

Especially one drive where he under threw two dump passes to a full back, his timing was off w/ Braylon Edwards in the end zone, and he threw it behind Kellon Winslow (Winslow ended up making a great play however). What did he throw - 3 for 8 or 4 for 9 or something like that?
I think BQ can be good, but I don't think he would have done better than Anderson last year or even this year.

As long as Cleveland doesn't trade away Quinn I'll be happy. I think Brady Quinn could be huge in the NFL, he got limited play time, and you really have to develop chemistry with the receivers, so that will come in time. I expect Quinn to be given a lot more time in Pre-Season, and if there are signs of trouble (like the Cincy game) I expect they'll be quick to throw in Quinn...... if we stuck with Frye last season, where would we be now???? gotta evolve. People say Derek Anderson was only successful because defenses hadn't faced him before....... well, we'll see I guess.

Anderson and Kosar are NOT a good comparison. One is a heady, QB with limited physical skills while the other is a strong-armed thrower that often misreads the defense. The fact is most QB's in the NFL today struggle with their reads on a regular basis, but few have the arm stength to overcome this deficiency. Tommy Maddox is this type of QB, and he is the guy that DA most resembles.
The fact is, however, DA was drafted in the 6th round and threw 29 TD passes while making the Pro Bowl. You also forget to mention that although the 'STATS' tell the story of a struggling QB, the team record was 5-3 in both halves of the season. So maybe the 2007 Cleveland Browns season had more to do with a team that includes Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Joe Thomas, Eric Steinback, Lawrence Vickers, Phil Dawson, Kamerion Wimbley, Sean Jones, Eric Wright, Brodney Pool, and Josh Cribbs. This list, of course is the 2007 team. Let's not forget Corey Williams, Shaun Rogers, Donte Stallworth and Rex Hadnot. All players that will be entering their 2nd to 4th year in Romeo's system.
All you Steeler fans want to point out how DA faded at the end of the year while Big Ben is a model of consistency at the QB position. My hunch is that 13 of the 15 players above would start if they were on the Steelers roster (I'll give you Polamua, Ward and Casey Hampton over Pool, Stallworth and Rogers). Do you think that the talent level of these 15 players is LESS important than who plays QB for the 2008 Browns? They've already proven they can win despite bad QB play in the 2nd half of the year.... can the Steelers win if Big Ben struggles? See 2006 NFL season.

I think that was the same argument people were making about Tony Romo before last season, but that was clearly incorrect. I think what you have to remember is that we ARE talking about a quarterback what made the Pro Bowl in his first full year as a starter. That is pretty good. Sure, there may be some drop off in his second year. There are certainly some areas that he could become more consistent in next year as well. However, he does not have to be the best quarterback in the NFL. All Derek Anderson really has to be is an accurate, reliable quarterback. | |
