81 years old and he still wants to coach football? Does this guy just not want to be at home?
I think someone should tell him that he should start enjoying his retirement. There is no reason he should be coaching till he dies on the field.

I think he enjoys his retirement every Saturday in the fall. He just kind of spaces out and stands on the sideline while his assistants call the games. Gotta love Joe Pa.

Never heard the phrase "...If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life."? He wouldn't have stayed at Penn State for nearly 60 years if he didn't love his job and the school. He's not definitely not doing it for the money. There was a big fuss for years about how much he was getting paid because it was info that Penn State and JP would not disclose. Then they finally had to release that info and come to find out he's one of the lower paid coaches in college football. Especially for a team the caliber of PSU making only about $500,000 a year (much of that he has donated back to the school) and thats a steal when you look at the success he's had. 2 national titles. 4 undefeated seasons. 2nd most division I wins behind Bobby Bowden and theres some debate behind that because bowden's win total includes I-AA wins while JP and i believe Bear Bryant's were all I-A. 79 years old he gets steamrolled by a Wisconsin player causing a compound fracture in his leg. The man had a bone sticking out and blood streaming down his leg and the trainers have to FORCE HIM to leave. You see him trying to stand up and his leg bending to the side and he wants to stay. There no way you can't say he loves what he does. His players are like his children. You hear stories of how his wife cooks these big sunday dinners for the players. Trust me he's having too much fun for retirement.

Exactly, people retire to do what they love. He loves what he is doing. He spends plenty of time with his wife and family so that is not an issue.
Those that bash JoePa do so for reasons that they simply do not understand or because they don't like him simply because they are a fan of another team. Not very good reasons not to like a man that has done a lot for college football, PSU, and countless individuals.

Joe Pa is a testament to an old school way of thinking. His dedication and loyalty to Penn State is a testament to his character. Another saying to ponder, "A man's word is his bond." No matter what team you claim as your team, you have to cheer for Joe Pa at least a little. I say keep doing what you love Joe Pa!

joe is too old. i think unless he wins 10 games this season this is a sign of things to come. penn state has the most problems of any major football school with players running into the law. maybe because jopa is to old to handle them. dont get me wrong he is a great coach but i dont think he has it left. how do u recruit players like Terrell Pryor when u cant guarentee how long the coach will be healthy enough to run the football program. great career joe but hand it over to someone else.

Did you ever think that he loves what he is doing and is supported by hi wife. Why retire when he continues to love what he does and is successful? JoePa is enjoying his "retirement" as the head coach at one of the best universities in the country. There is something to be said about the respect that he is given by the university administration. Paterno has shown nothing but loyalty throughout his career and now that loyalty is being rewarded. Not only has he been loyal, he has been extremely successful. If he wants to coach until he dies on the field, let him...he has earned the right to make that choice.

Heady03 too old? welll lets see he is 81 and still coaching an elite college football program, the school does not see him as too old, the players definitely do not. Penn St will never fire or let him go without it being him making that decision, and guess what?? they owe that to him. Over the last 15 yeras he could have been making at least 2 million a year to coach there, he never asked for that kind of money, he barely gets paid at all whne you consider he donates most of what he earns right back to the school. If Penn St ever did decide to force him out they would be in shambles for the next 20 years, the boosters would turn on them, the players would not be comming there, and they would not win. He knows in his heart when he no longer coaches he will be history, dead shortly there after. No nobody is too old to do what they enjoy, ask Earl Morral (QB of the superbowl winnig Miami Dolphins) or George Blanda (started a game at QB at 48).

Why retire. He obviously loves coaching kids play football. That is what he does. That is what he knows. What do you want him to do sit back on the couch and watch old sitcom reruns. If he wants to die coaching football cause that is what he likes to do let him be. He isn't ruining the program. He is a better coach than anyone they would bring in I'm sure so let him be. Besides those glasses are so thick he wears he can see the future maybe he sees another big ten title in the near future. As a Wolverine fan I have the utmost respect for Joe Pa and believe he should be able to decide when its his time and obviously that time is not now.

Joe Pa does what he wants. I doubt if the President would ever mess with Joe Pa. He is an icon and if he wants to coach until he dies he has that choice and very few people ever get that choice.
What would he do with retirement? Sit around the house and try to figure out what to do? Heck football is a game and a fun game its not hard work its fun stuff so why not do it till the day you die. I would.

Here's an idea......maybe he loves it? could be? Maybe he doesn't want to sit home all day? Maybe this makes him feel more alive? Maybe this keeps him going? It's not the goal of everyone in this country to sit around and do nothing you know.
