A recent development has been brought to my attention by a recent post by Adam Zagoria.
Apparently, if we miss out on the Devin Ebanks sweeptakes, we could receive a consolation prize to fill that final scholarship this year, in the form of Greg Echinique.
It has recently been uncovered that Echinique completed a year of high school while still in his native Venezuela, meaning that he is uneligible to play high school ball next year.
He has two courses of action that he could possibly take:
1. He could join St. Benedict's prep team, which would allow him to play another year in the high school ranks. This looks to be his preferred path right now. Or,
2. He could apply to Rutgers, sign a LOI, join the team starting this summer, and be eligible to play in 2008.
A major factor in this decision could be whether or not Ebanks signs with RU. If we have a shot at Ebanks, Echenique will obviously leave that scholarship open by playing prep ball next year. If not, he could possibly fill that final scholarship, assuming coach Hill doesn't already have another kid lined up in case we lose out on Ebanks.
I'll keep you posted.
Another development, although admittedly not a very big deal, is that both Echenique and Dane Miller have been upgraded. Echinique has gone from a 4-star prospect to a 5-star, according to scout.com, and Miller has gone from a 3-star to a 4-star.
This really doesn't affect us much at all, except as far as perception goes. People will not see that we've got 4 and 5 star kids coming in year after year, and will start to take this program seriously.
Now all we have to do is find some consistency on the court.
