What really do you learn about either side of the ball? Each side knows what the other side is going to do or has a good idea any way. They should have a summer game after the freshmen have a had a chance to learn for a few weeks and then you could really see whats going on. You know a game couple of weeks before the kick- off game just to see how each player handes the crowd and the game day atmosphere. I know there is a chance of injury but if someone blows a knee out now they are still out for next year anyway.
