Michigan State has a really good recruiting class coming in next year with the best recruit being Delvon Roe.
There's a good amount of other strong recruits coming to East Lansing as well.
Any thoughts?

I think you're giving our freshmen too much credit spartanmanaaron. Have you not seen how poorly MSU has executed things the past three years?! They just haven't gotten it done.
I'm kind of worried about who's going to be Michigan States leader this far away upcoming year. Lucas, Walton, Suton, Morgan??? Who's going to step up in the clutch and get wins for us? I think Lucas and Suton want it more than anybody else. They work their arses off game in and game out, and off the court. Morgan just didn't bring as much fire as those two did last year. And lets face it, Walton sucks. He turns the ball over and doesn't score. He does play some solid D, but he can't make a shot to save his sorry arse. It's probably going to be Lucas considering how explosive he is and seeing how high his potential is.
Seeing our high caliber recruits come in is awesome! But, we all know that either one of them can be a dud. Just look at MSU's Bball recruiting history and look at how high or low ranked they were and where they are now. Ex: Naymick was a 4 star and all he did was get wide open dunks, block shots, and grab a few rebounds. Definitely not a star athlete.
My point being is that you can't get your hopes up too much for this season or any other season, because it will sometimes back fire on you. And some of us have learned that the hard way. Like going to school and talking up MSU with your Iowa friends at school is the dumbest thing you can ever do. Even though they didn't have much to come back with, considering all Iowa teams sucked this year.

erbrown, you definitely do make some good points. I, however think that you left out some key names as to who will step up in the clutch. Names such as Chris Allen and Durrell Summers. Chris Allen is a better shooter than Drew Neitzel was and Tom Izzo says that Durrell Summers is as athletic as Jason Richardson was and he definitely showed me sparks of potential throughout the year. As did Chris Allen.
Kalin Lucas has improved significantly throughout the past season and I personally think he will continue to get better and even have a chance of getting to the league.
Raymar Morgan had quite a few struggles this year but also showed that he has the ability to take over the whole game. I think Tom Izzo will get into him a little and strengthen his game so as to be a leader in the next couple of years.
Drew Naymick's main purpose was to be an enforcer on defense. I think he did just that by becoming, by far, the leader in blocked shots in Michigan State's history. It also always seemed like he provided a spark when we needed one.
All in all, it is just hard for me not to get my hopes up. My hopes are always high for the teams I like. Even the Detroit Lions lol. I just see all of the positive things and think it hard to not have my hopes high for the upcoming season...even with the possibility of them getting crushed.

hey thats cool spartanmanaaron, positive 'tude. Whenever I get really excited for my team to do well and they end up playing well below my expectations, I become depressed you know. Not like oh my gosh, I can't live with myself, I'm committing suicide or anything like that; just upset, frustrated, and my friends beat on me some more.
It all goes back to seeing how poorly MSU basketball (and football) has executed in the past few years. They just played far below my expectations and maybe to some of the other Spartan fans.
This year might be a little better; as you know, I really don't want to get ahead of myself. With

I really don't think Allen or Summers can be that great of leaders. Allen just never seemed to be the pure shooter that I expected. And Summers didn't do much because he turned Izzo didn't play him enough and his defense is poor.

I personally see a year somewhat opposite of this past season. We are going to have a heck of a time making it through the non confrence season with the caliber teams we have to play. State is going to be a fairly young team also with most of the "key" players being sophomores and freshmen save for morgan and suton. Once we make it to the Big Ten season though I do think we may start to make a statement. If the team can escape to the Big Ten season with a winning record we'll be just fine I believe. As much as I liked Neitzel I think that him being gone may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I see Lucas, Allen, Summers, and Roe really coming into their own as the season moves along. As far as how far they will go, I will say sweet sixteen again this year and final four next year. Guess we'll all just have to wait and see!

Those kids grow and evolve from year to year. During the off season, many of them go through a metamorphosis and surprise everyone with the quantum change (increase) in sophistication of play and raw ability. Part of it is plain old biology, part of it is heart.
Hence, one should never count out any player.
Point to keep in mind: it is not the team leader that wins the games, it is the team. The team can play great ball without a designated leader. In fact, having a single star or designated leader is detrimental to the gelling of the team. When players start leaning on one person, they stop depending on themselves.
I see State with a better season than last year, with good BigTen prospects and a Final 4 appearance. In 2010, I see those new kids ready to go for the championship.

MSUSpartan76, I would have to agree with those points.
I think that last season we relied to much on Drew Neitzel. We looked for him no matter what and after thinking about it a little bit, I have come to believe that we relied too much on him and not enough on the rest of the team.
Also, I think that a BigTen tournament win nex year is a good possibility as is a regular season championship along with a Final Four appearance. I believe 2010 is our year for the championship.

Have we been done this road before? Kalin Lucas and Chris Allen were supposed to be the answer for this past season. They played well for freshmen, but the team didn't live up to expectations! To me, they were not TOUGH enough!
I can't believe that next year's team will be much better! TOM IZZO is a great coach-tough, single-minded, dedicated. It appears that the players that he brought in Goran Zuton, Marquis Grey, Walton, Summers, etc., just haven't become the tough Spartans.
I am hoping that we do get the great Spartans next season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michigan State hasn't had a true "leader" since Mateen Cleeves. In my opinion, that's the one thing missing that is preventing State from being a true national title threat.
When I refer to a leader, I'm talking about a player who will put the team on his back and absolutely refuse to lose. Now, these guys still lose occasionally but their will to win is never questioned and more often than not, they come out on top.
The best leaders in recent memory at Michigan State are Earvin Johnson, Scott Skiles, and Mateen Cleeves. If MSU could get one player with a similar mental make-up to any of these three, watch out.
As is, they're a good team with a chance to be a very good team. A lot of talent, just missing that one key ingredient.

wtexas,
Given the roster, how would you rate each player with respect to the prospect of that player becoming the "will to win" guy?
Not wishing to make this seem like a disagreement, but I would rather have all those kids have that driving will to win, rather than depend on only one.

wow u people were disappointed in msu last year? u really thought we had the pieces in place for a national championship?i mean anything can happen, but to say they underachieved? i was proud the way the freshman played, especially being neitzels final year(knowing he was gonna be the man to shoot). with our good recruiting class this year and last years nice class i see us as a top 10 team next year regardless of how many regular season losses we have. we play a tough schedule to prepare for the tournament. as to say naymick was a 4 star and u thought he was gonna really be an all american or something?thats crazy im from muskegon where he came from. he played in the lowest class available playing for north muskegon.he had good size but we all knew he was gonna be nuthin. he ended up being a very good player for izzo and i bet if u asked izzo that he would agree. he never thought naymick was gonna be a 20 pt scorer i mean dam he is the schools all time block leader and played well in the tournament runs he had. we will be ok this year. raymar is the one who makes us either suck or dominate! as he goes we go! GO STATE! cant wait to see roe in a msu uniform!

Cleaves,
You left out Lucas and Allen. Yes, Allen. Allen might just have a break out year. Lucas is proven.
State did just about exactly how I predicted last November. I am not disappointed in what the team accomplished. Would have been great had they won a few more, know what I mean?

I definitely do not think that Michigan State underachieved. The freshman especially played pretty well. I honestly believe that not only Allen, but Durell Summers will have a break out year next year as well.
